Saturday Slate: Week 2 Matchups to Watch in College Football

Nothing quite beats opening weekend of college football. There’s no preseason, no practice runs. Week 1 as usual provided entertainment all the way through. Before I get into the Week 2 matchups you should be watching, lets recap Week 1.

What we learned: Kenny Football! Kenny Heisman! Kenny Trill! Kenny.. Sumlin? Seriously, Kenny Hill looked great.   His throws’ were accurate and on time all night long. But it’s time Kevin Sumlin gets recognized as one of the best offensive minds in football. Receivers were open… all… night… long. South Carolina’s defense had no answers, as they were too busy running sideline-to-sideline trying to catch their breath all night. (more…)

The Russell Athletic Bowl was the first game of the 2012-2013 bowl season to go to overtime, but it wasn’t much of a thriller. Both offenses were out of rhythm throughout the game: only one offensive touchdown was scored including in overtime, Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas and Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova both struggled with accuracy and mistakes throughout the game, and a Russell Athletic Bowl record of 21 punts was set.

Thomas did nothing to help his sinking draft stock, while the defensive standouts were senior linebackers Khaseem Greene of Rutgers and Bruce Taylor of Virginia Tech. More detailed evaluations of each top draft prospect’s performance:

Among Friday’s three bowl games, the one likely to generate the most interest from NFL scouts is the Russell Athletic Bowl, featuring the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Virginia Tech Hokies. With some very talented defensive prospects on both teams, this should be especially true for the New England Patriots.
