Saturday, August 31st, 2013

Zoltan Mesko’s time as a Patriot ended on Saturday.

After all the projecting and prognosticating the Patriots cut their roster down to the league mandate of 53. Actually the Patriots took it a step further and cut the roster to 51. As is always the case there were a few surprises and this year an unprecedented number of rookies on the roster.

Here is how the Patriots roster breaks down and what could be in store over the weekend as the Patriots try to finalize their team.

One thing that often gets overlooked during roster projections is the short and long term impact of the salary cap. Here is a look at my current Patriots roster, as well as all the cap savings that could occur if the Patriots cut or released certain players.

The Patriots wrapped up training camp on Friday and now embark on a schedule which features three games in nine days. With the Jeff Demps signing and some injuries coming up things have changed since the first week of training camp. Who makes the roster and who is on the chopping block? Check out my 3rd attempt at what the Patriots initial 53 man roster will look like.

It’s wise to remember one thing in the NFL, a lot can change in a week.

Yes, that even includes during training camp. Between going to camp twice last weekend and both Wednesday and Sunday this week, I blew up my roster prediction and started all over again.

Sunday’s practice was perhaps the most concerning that I’ve been to this year and I’ll be using this roster prediction for what I saw at training camp Sunday. Be sure to check out my Twitter timeline (@DougKyedNEPD) for all practice observations.

The Patriots pre-season roster is deep – really deep. Just how deep are they? Well, I decided to take an in depth look at the current roster and rank the players from top to bottom based on a combination of talent and the likelihood they will make the team.

It really paints a picture of how deep the roster is and how many tough decisions the coaching staff will be faced with as training camp moves forward.

Now that the draft, free agency and the player acquisition period has come to an end, the 2012 New England Patriots Roster is coming into focus. As of right now the Patriots 90 man roster is loaded with talented players from top to bottom.

Training camp this year will be ultra-competitive as 75 or so players who have a legitimate shot at making the roster will fight for 53 spots.

What will the most competitive position battles be and who will win out? I take a look at all the position battles to watch as training camp is quickly approaching.

Dont'a Hightower Patriots NFL Draft

Where will this versatile rookie fit into the Patriots hybrid defense?

NEPD Editor: Doug Kyed

With the 2012 NFL Draft over, it’s time to focus on where the Patriots stand with all their new parts.

New England is nearing their 90 player limit with 86 players and only a few more needs to fill. It’s safe to say that the offense has only improved over the offseason and the defense is certainly getting there as well.

Some added youth from the draft, young players progressing and key free agent acquisitions will only help this Super Bowl losing team regain their 2011 form.
