Day 1 of the 2013 NFL draft is in the books, and with it came some shockers.

Not many thought three of the first four draft picks would be offensive tackles. Not many thought Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker would jump up to the San Diego Chargers at No. 11. Not many thought that Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei would drop to the Carolina Panthers at No. 14. And most certainly, not many thought that Florida State’s E.J. Manuel would end up being the first quarterback drafted at No. 16.

What kinds of surprises are in store for us tonight? It’s time to look ahead and delve into the Day 2 possibilities.

Will the Patriots pick another safety from Fresno State in the 2013 NFL Draft?

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

Zero hour is before us. After months and months of speculation the 2013 NFL Draft is finally here. It’s without a doubt the most exciting time of the season for most fans. No matter what happens this weekend your team is going to add players to their roster, and with each selection there’s a possibility that your team’s next star is born. It’s what makes the draft so much fun. Forget about all the “this is the worst draft in a while” non-sense.

There will be stars drafted in this year’s draft and it’s up to your team to find them. Here is my latest Patriots only projection based on what I think is likely to happen over the course of the weekend.  Have at it draft fans!

Five Wide Receivers Unlikely to Be New England Patriots

Keenan Allen will have value to an NFL team, likely as a No. 2 possession receiver, but the New England Patriots are not the best fit.

The New England Patriots do not have many pressing needs going into the 2013 NFL draft, but the one position they absolutely must address at least once in the early rounds is at wide receiver.

Of the wide receivers to catch passes for the Patriots last season, the only one currently on their roster for the 2013 season is Julian Edelman, who is a versatile and athletic slot receiver but has issues with durability. The Patriots brought in a solid replacement for Wes Welker in the slot in free-agent signing Danny Amendola, but Brandon Lloyd was released while the only other significant wide receiver additions were Michael Jenkins and Donald Jones, neither of whom is a lock to make the Patriots’ 53-man roster.

Other than Julian Edelman, out of the wide receivers that are under contract with the New England Patriots for 2013, not one of them caught a pass from Tom Brady last season.

In just a matter of a month or so, the Patriots have completely restructured their wide receiver corps. We have seen Wes Welker sign with the Denver Broncos, Brandon Lloyd released while the team has welcomed Danny Amendola, Donald Jones and Michael Jenkins. Not to mention that the team could very well be welcoming Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agent Emmanuel Sanders to the team as well—as we sit hours away from learning whether or not the Steelers will match Nwe England’s offer sheet on Sanders.

Whether or not that the Steelers decide to match New England’s offer or let Sanders walk, I still do believe that there’s a legitimate shot that the team could draft a wide receiver in the first round. In that spirit, let’s take a look at three possible wide receivers that will be available at No. 29 overall.

This week, we’ll be taking a look at some positions the New England Patriots may target in the 2013 NFL Draft on a round-by-round basis, highlighting one potentially-available prospect who may attract New England’s interest in each frame of April’s draft. Today, we’ll begin by taking a look at seven wide receivers that could end up in Foxboro next month.

Should California Wide Receiver Keenan Allen Be a 1st-Round Pick in 2013?

As of now, it does not appear that there will be any Justin Blackmon, A.J. Green or Julio Jones in the 2013 NFL draft class. While all three of those receivers were college superstars who established themselves as top-10 draft picks, there is not even one sure-fire first-round draft pick yet among draft-eligible wide receivers.

There are a few players, however, getting hype as the potential No. 1 wide receiver in the draft class, and one of those players near the top of the list is California junior Keenan Allen. With that said, however, it may not even be safe to say that Allen should be a first-round draft pick, assuming he declares for this year’s draft.
