There was a halftime shift in the New England Patriots’ comeback win over the Denver Broncos in Week 12. And while that was apparent in the 34-31 final score, it was also apparent in the use of rookie wide receivers Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins.

As the second-round pick opened the game at “X” receiver, the undrafted free-agent opened the game No. 4 on the depth chart. Yet after intermission, their roles were switched. The 6’0”, 195-pound Thompkins found himself on the field, and the 6’3”, 200-pound Dobson found himself predominantly observing from the sidelines.

The beneficiary, whose first passing play came with five seconds left in the first half, ultimately finished with six catches on nine targets for 56 yards. On the other end, Dobson finished catchless over his 37 snaps, relieving an injured Thompkins for just two plays in the third.

At first glance, the personnel switch suggested that the 22-year-old Marshall wideout had been benched in favor of the 25-year-old Cincinnati product. But in reality, the decision delved deeper than that. Dobson was not spotted at Patriots practice on Wednesday due to a foot injury, and Thompkins’ skill set and route tree best suited Denver’s defense. (more…)

Growth isn’t always quantitative; it isn’t always measurable by the day or week. But in stages, lower and simpler forms can develop into higher and more complex forms.

And while the progression of these stages is neither a constant nor a guarantee, it’s clear that New England Patriots rookie draft picks Jamie Collins, Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon have reached the next one.

Sunday night’s frigid battle at Gillette Stadium versus the Denver Broncos was the venue for them to do so. (more…)

Planning for Peyton Manning: How Different Defensive Looks Have Found Success vs. Broncos

Saturday, November 23rd, 2013

As previous opponents have learned, solving Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos offense requires more than one answer. (USA Today Sports Images)

When it comes to defending Peyton Manning, there isn’t a silver bullet in the defensive playbook. There isn’t one particular player, scheme or personnel package that can take the eyes, intelligence, arm and in-pocket mobility away from the Denver Broncos future Hall of Fame quarterback.

Defending the 37-year-old requires a mixture of different looks and disguises. And every NFL defense that has faced the 12-time Pro Bowler has employed its own method in doing so. But thus far into the 2013 season, few teams have seen their creative efforts culminate in the final score. The Broncos are 9-1, and Manning’s 70-percent passing for 3,572 yards, 34 touchdowns and just six interceptions are an integral reason in why.

Manning is orchestrating a prolific offensive attack reinforced by wideouts Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Wes Welker, tight end Julius Thomas and versatile tailback Knowshon Moreno. Predominantly through that onslaught, Denver has notched a league-leading 398 points through Week 11.

Yet come 8:30 p.m. ET on Sunday night, the New England Patriots will try to avert that production in meeting No. 14 between Manning and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Although in order to understand the measures New England might take versus Manning and the Broncos, it’s important to understand the measures Denver’s opponents have taken to find some semblance of success in previous tilts. (more…)

John Clayton reported on ESPN Radio that there is a rumor that if Manning winds up on the Broncos, the New England Patriots are the favorites to land Tim Tebow in a trade.
