2015 New England Patriots: Ranking the Roster from 90 to 1

Where do these three defensive studs rank on the current roster?

Where do these three defensive studs stand on the current roster?

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

A lot of the excitement around training camp is a result of watching 90 football players battle it out for a finite number of roster spots. There’s an old adage that “anyone can make the roster”, but that’s not entirely true. Some players are assured a roster spot no matter how bad they look in camp. On the other hand there are some players that will take the field that have no shot at making the 53-man roster even if they outperform most veteran players. There are a number of factors at work for each roster decision. As the first week of training camp progresses I take a look at where each player ranks on the current roster in relation to one another and layout their chances of making the final roster.

Offensive MVP

Tom Brady: I could sit here and write out the stats, but you already know them by heart after all the Brady-Manning week hoopla. I could even break down his throwing mechanics and how he still has pin point accuracy at age 37. I could also detail how he’s getting this done with less than others… but I’m not going to do that. All I really need to say is, mobility. Tom Brady hasn’t become Randall Cunningham, but he’s utilized his legs more than ever this season. Early offensive line struggles this year may have actually benefited him because he looks more aggressive after the snap with his movement. Being forced to create space and time due to poor line play has compelled Brady to step out of his comfort zone, literally. In some ways his recent play has reminded me of Ben Roethlisberger. Who in the past, has had to compensate for a poor line by stepping out of the pocket to give receivers a chance to get open down field. Fortunately, Brady’s line has come together and we don’t have to worry about him taking unnecessary punishment like Big Ben has in recent seasons. But this added element to his game should only bode well for the Patriots’ offense come January.

Using a different combination along the offensive line on Sunday night, the Patriots found a way to unlock the Bengals defensive front. (NFL Game Rewind)

It has been trial and error for the New England Patriots. But there were very few errors involved when the Patriots deployed a different combination on the interior offensive line against the then-undefeated Cincinnati Bengals Sunday night.

With two-year starting center Ryan Wendell over at right guard, Dan Connolly opposite him at left guard, and rookie Bryan Stork in the middle, the pieces fit into place. And those pieces changed the complexion of New England’s offense on the way to unlocking Cincinnati’s defense.

It it began with aggressiveness at the line of scrimmage. Stork, a fourth-round pick in May, was an integral part of it. The Week 5 game marked only the second start of his season and NFL career, but aside from false start and holding penalties in the third quarter, the game proved to not be too fast for him.

Sometimes, he was too fast for it. (more…)
