2013 NFL Draft: Top Remaining Targets on Defense

Jesse Williams Alabama

Jesse Williams is falling like a rock. Rumored knee problems could be the main reason.

Now that the first round along with the second and third rounds are in the books for the 2013 NFL Draft, let’s take a look at the top remaining targets on defense.

Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama

It’s rather surprising to see Jesse Williams still available he was regarded as a top 50 prospect. Williams is a solid athlete that is very strong up top but is lacking a tad bit in lower-body strength. Williams is a very versatile defensive linemen and can fit in any system at the NFL level.

Alex Okafor, DE, Texas

Alex Okafor is a very versatile prospect as he can play either outside linebacker in the 3-4 or defensive end in the 4-3. The biggest concern with Okafor is it’s uncertain to what position he’ll play at the NFL level—what system does he fit best in?

Phillip Thomas, FS, Fresno State

One of Phillips Thomas’ biggest knocks is his tackling skills—he’s very inconsistent. However, many believe that Thomas was a top tier safety entering this year’s class however NFL teams clearly don’t feel the same way.

Cornelius Washington, DE, Georgia

I figured Cornelius Washington would have been drafted but apparently NFL teams feel that he was just a product of a very good defense at Georgia this past season. Washington’s biggest knock is his inability to get off of blocks—and clearly that’s a necessity for a defensive end.

Khaseem Greene, OLB, Rutgers

Khaseem Greene has the potential to be a pretty solid pick for a team entering the final day of the NFL draft. Greene has great instinct and is very fast to the point of attack. However, Greene is limited—he projects as only a 4-3 outside linebacker.

never thought i`d be saying this, but enough with the defense already, we are stocked. what we need now is o-line depth and another wr. oh and a developmental qb would be awesome 😀

I’m hoping for Alex Okafor in the 4th.

they got Collins already for that role.

      • Ken W says:

Collins is more of a OLB that you can move all around and bring pressure. Okafor is a DE that you can put across from Jones and get after the QB.

The more guys you have that can get to the QB the better.

Okafor projects both as an OLB and DE in the NFL, just like Collins.
The two are so close that they are not gonna use two picks on virtually identical players especially with positions needing a revamp. Had they gotten a LB like Moore or Brown, a move for Okafor could still be reasonable to expect but not with Collins already on board.

They have plenty of guys like that – Scott is also waiting on the side and Abraham and some other DEs are also looking for a new team.

Akeem Spence as well–a great 3-technique with outstanding hustle.
