2010 Patriots Rookie Roundup

NEPD Staff Writer: Jerry F.

Trying to judge a professional football player or team for that matter by preseason games is like trying to determine the future of a love relationship based on the first date.  Or perhaps placing a bet on Blackpool FC to win the English Premier League, based only on their 4-0 drubbing of Wigan Athletic in the first match of a 38 game season.

In both instances you could end up getting burned on the long run. However, when it comes to rookies, preseason games is the only yardstick available to measure their performance and what the future possibly holds for them on the team.

We’ll attempt to assess and analyze the first seven picks of the Patriots 2010 draft class based on what they have done (or not) so far in two preseason games against the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons.

We’ll start things off with the Patriots 1st Round Pick, Devin McCourty.

I think that realizing the long term possibilities by drafting McCourty and the special advantages he embraces both mentally and physically made him in retrospect a great pick. Yes they could use more perimeter defensive talent but was there someone at those positions that would in retrospect have you exchange for Gronkowski, Spikes, Price, or Hernandez.

Thats the way i saw the McCourty pick.he’s a utility player because he can play on special teams, return kicks and be a good cornerback.Belichick has always been known to love those type of guys that are multi dimiensional.
