Victory Slips Through The Ravens Fingers (Again)

After the bitter ending to the 2007 Ravens/Patriots game, which bizarrely ended in a Patriot win, the Ravens had 14 yards to redemption. Unfortunately for the Ravens, Mark Clayton let a perfect 4th down pass bounce off his hands and on to the field turf at Gillette Stadium, spoiling an otherwise great day for Joe Flacco and friends.

Clayton had to be thinking of the veritable “Cerberus” of Patriot safeties, who spent Sunday afternoon lighting up Ravens with hard hits and great coverage. James Sanders and Brandon Meriweather were great in coverage, while Brandon McGowan delivered some monster hits while also recovering a fumble.

Randy Moss and Tom Brady finally were able to hook up for a touchdown in 2009, even though he was held to just 3 catches, giving the Patriots a 24-14 lead. The true story of the Patriots offensive success, however, was in the Patriots running backs. Fred Taylor provided some tough yards, while Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk converted 3rd and 4th downs with ease.

A few bright spots for the Patriots included the play of rookie CB Darius Butler, who shadowed Ravens WR’s all day. DT Terdell Sands, DT Myron Pryor, and Mike Wright also had an impact playing inside.

The Patriots will face their former Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels next week, as they square off against the Denver Broncos.
