Free agency is five hours old and there has been plenty of activity to keep NFL fans glued to their Twitter feeds. The New England Patriots, however, have been dead silent. It should come as no surprise, as the Patriots let the market settle, determine the value of players and then jump in head first with plenty of cap room. The same can’t be said Miami, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Indianapolis all of whom have been making multiple moves today.

Here are my thoughts on day one of free agency (so far).

Patriots Free Agency Preview

It is a busy time for Bill Belichick and Nick Caserio.

The most exciting time of the NFL off-season is here. Free agency is a mere two days away from starting and the Patriots are well positioned, ready to attack the free agent market with 25.3 million in available cap space. By showing financial restraint after the lockout, the Patriots are primed to add to what is already a very competitive football team.

There still remains interest in resigning many of their own free agents and a robust buyers market means the Patriots expect to be active on Tuesday and beyond. Who will they target in free agency? Will they resign any of their own free agents? What holes can be filled via free agency?

All of these topics are discussed in this comprehensive 2013 Patriots free agency preview.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported today that New England Patriots free agent wide receiver Wes Welker “has no plans to re-sign with the team before first testing the free-agent market next week.”

This comes on the heels of an article posted by Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports yesterday which reported on what Cole referred to as “Welker’s somewhat mild disdain for the Patriots right now” , resulting from “how he was treated in last year’s opener, when offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had him targeted for a season-low five pass attempts.”

Read on to find out what this means for New England.

Would a younger Wes Welker be preferable to the real deal?

NEPD Staff Writer: Tony Santorsa

As Monday’s franchise tag deadline has come and gone, the New England Patriots elected not to tag any of their players—which means that they’ll hit the open market on March 12 if the two sides cannot come to an agreement on an extension.

What if Welker doesn’t get re-signed?

Despite recent news regarding Tom Brady’s contract extension and how there are ongoing negations between the New England Patriots and Wes Welker—I’m still not buying the idea that Welker will be a Patriot in 2013.

In all honesty, there has been no concrete news indicating that Brady’s contract extension has anything to do with Welker—however, you can still speculate that they are related to each other.

With news surfacing that the New England Patriots will likely try to reach a contract extension with Wes Welker prior to free agency on March 12, the Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady have agreed to a contract extension—an extension for Welker could very well be in the future.

Will the salary cap allow Wes Welker to don a Patriots uniform in 2013?

NEPD Staff Writer: Tony Santorsa

I will admit: I have been extremely doubtful that Wes Welker would be a member of the New England Patriots in 2013 but there’s a solid chance that the two parties will come to an agreement on a contract extension.
