Patriots Re-sign Tully Banta Cain

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Firing their first salvo in free-agency, the Patriots have re-signed veteran OLB Tully Banta-Cain. His contract will average $4.5m per year, with escalators and incentives that could make it closer to $6m. He also received a $6m signing-bonus.

Banta-Cain led the Patriots in sacks last year, totaling 9.5 during his first year back after a short stint in San Francisco.

Much Ado About Nothing

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

After 72 hours of fretting and wondering about what huge shakeup would be coming to Foxborough ended in calming fizzle.

In sum, the Patriots released veteran WR Joey Galloway and TE Michael Matthews, while reworking the contract(s) of Tully Banta-Cain and possibly Eric Alexander. According to Bill Belichick, Alexander was never actually released, contrary to published reports.

The two open spots on the 53-man roster pave the way for OT Mark Levoir and WR Brandon Tate to join the squad off of the PUP list. If either of them aren’t quite ready-today was the first day they could practice-a practice squad player could be called up. Don’t be surprised if WR Terrence Nunn sees some action in Jolly London.

Patriots Sign Banta-Cain

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

After a failed experiment with the San Francisco 49ers, the Patriots have re-signed OLB Tully Banta-Cain. Cain was originally drafted by the Patriots in the 7th round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He parlayed some quality backup play and pass rush ability into a good contract in San Fran. Ultimately though, it seems like he is more adept in a defensive package like the Patriots.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but speculation states that it is a one-year deal. You can read more from Reiss at his blog.
