The pads went on Saturday and with it the “official” start of Patriots training camp has begun. Competition was ramped up and with a lot of jobs on the line so were emotions. With the new CBA teams are only allowed a handful of full pads practices.

With a lot going on throughout the day here are 15 things that were learned throughout the day, as well as things that stood out in Foxboro.

The fate of Tavon Wilson was instantly changed with the writing of his name on a draft card by New England Patriots staff at the 2012 NFL Draft. He was instantly tied to the likes of Stevan Ridley, Sebastian Vollmer, Logan Mankins and Richard Seymour – players who were instantly panned as “reaches” by many fans, experts and media members.

Will Wilson join the names above or will he enter into the realm of Terrence Wheatley, Darius Butler and other second round picks who couldn’t make it in Foxborough.

After the New England Patriots drafted Tavon Wilson, most fans thought the “What!?!” pick had already been made by the Patriots in the 2012 NFL Draft. However, Bill Belichick had another surprise in store for the New England faithful with his sixth round selection of Ohio State DB and rugby player Nate Ebner.

Alongside wide receiver Wes Welker and offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, starting safety Patrick Chung is considered one of New England’s most valuable impending free agents.

Chung, who is set to turn 25 years old in August, has established himself as one of New England’s best defensive players since being drafted with the Patriots’ top pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Boston Herald recently reported that New England has yet to discuss a contract extension with Chung, but it is expected that New England would be interested in re-signing Chung before he reaches the open market.

Of course, both the team and the player must be receptive to an extension, so a middle ground will have to be reached in order for the club to lock up Chung long-term.

Texas strong safety Kenny Vaccaro opted to return to school for his senior season rather than join the weak safety class in the 2012 NFL Draft; unfortunately there are a number of highly-regarded safeties eligible for the draft this year who could be competing with Vaccaro for draft positioning.

Matt Elam (Florida), Robert Lester (Alabama), T.J. McDonald (Southern California), Bacarri Rambo* (Georgia), and Eric Reid* (Louisiana State) are all considered potential first or second-day picks.

Tavon Wilson is the newest surprise pick for the Patriots.

With the 48th pick in the NFL Draft, the Patriots selected FS Tavon Wilson from Illinois.

That is by far the most shocking pick in the draft, but since Belichick did it, it’s also the least surprising.
