Over the course of 2013, the New England Patriots defensive line altered through 58 personnel groupings.

Part of it was scheme, as some players departed to the sidelines during short yardage or passing downs. Part of it was attrition, as some stayed on the sidelines for the duration.

Rob Ninkovich was not one of them.

His No. 50 jersey was spotted on the field for 1,114 snaps last season – according to Pro Football Focus – second to only teammate Chandler Jones among the league’s 4-3 defensive ends. And by the conclusion of Week 17, there were only 54 snaps in which Ninkovich hadn’t been seen on it.

In Sunday’s 33-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins in 2014 regular-season opener, there were 39.

Ninkovich was one of the first 11 on the field for the tilt at Sun Life Stadium. But the 6’2”, 260-pound edge-rusher was not a constant across from Jones.

That wasn’t necessarily a deviation from the 2013 campaign, which saw Ninkovich step back to outside linebacker when the Patriots moved from a four-man line to a three-man line. Yet something was different on Sept. 7. (more…)

In probably the most interesting draft selections that the New England Patriots made in the 2012 NFL draft was selecting Tavon Wilson out of Illinois with the 48th overall pick.

For starters, I did not like this selection at all—but Wilson sure impressed me in his rookie season.

Blame for Patriots Secondary Struggles Start at the Top

Patriots Secondary

Enough.

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

This will be my one and only article on this topic, at least for awhile. After watching another meltdown in the 4th quarter, compounded by the inability of the defensive backs to make routine plays in pass coverage.

I have had enough.

I have had enough of watching an opposing Quarterback launch a Hail Mary pass from their own 30 yard line knowing that there is more than a 50% chance that their receiver will come down with the ball or at the very least the opposing defensive back will interfere in the process. I have had enough.

So who’s to blame and what is going on back there?

Nate Ebner has been a man of mystery since the moment he was drafted in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Many fans and draft analysts alike were scrambling for information on the former Ohio State Buckeye, and with Ebner missing the first few days of training camp, not a lot of questions were answered.

With Ebner back on the field, is his play worthy of cracking the Patriots final roster?
