Last month, I broke down all 21 defensive backs that the Patriots have drafted in my Drafting Defensive Backs: A Patriots Case Study post. The results were a little surprising: Bill Belichick has some Al Davis in him.

Now that the combine is over, we have a better idea of which defensive backs in this draft class may fit those standards, which seem to rely strongly on workout numbers.

In today’s post I’ll break down those players to see who may be the best fit in New England, and who the Pats might not even bother looking at.

After researching what the Patriots might look for when drafting for the secondary yesterday, I took a look at all of the defensive backs down at the Senior Bowl this year to see who the Patriots might have been most interested in.

There is no perfect player here, but there are certainly some players that fit the Patriots mold.

Drafting Defensive Backs: A Patriots Case Study

Believe it or not, Darius Butler was a prototypical Patriots defensive back draft pick.

Entering the 2012 NFL Draft, there seems to be one common sentiment among Patriots fans, “We need defensive backs!”

One of the chief reasons why the Patriots need defensive backs is their spotty history in the draft taking corners and safeties.

Throughout the twelve seasons Bill Belichick has been Head Coach, the Patriots have taken 21 defensive backs, four remain with the team.

I put together a spreadsheet containing all of those players vitals, hoping to come up with some patterns to possibly try to determine what the Patriots look for in a DB, and which players in the 2012 class they’ll potentially be looking at. (Thanks to NFLDraftScout.com and the Boston.com Draft Database for all combine results)

Here are some of the most interesting findings:
