Patriots Looking to Trade Up?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

According to SFGate.com, an “unnamed team” is interested in dealing for the #8 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, which belongs to the Oakland Raiders. The “mystery” team is reportedly offering a 2011 1st Round Pick and a 2nd rounder in 2010.

While this easily could be the Eagles or some other team, just think for a minute – which team already has an extra 1st round draft pick next year, and three 2nd round selections in 2010? Well that would be the Patriots of course, and it just so happens that they own Oakland’s 1st rounder in 2011.

If it is the Patriots eying the 8th pick in the NFL Draft, which is a BIG if, who might they be targeting? Rolando McClain (LB, Alabama), Joe Haden (CB, Florida), as well as any number of the talented O-linemen in this year’s class immediately come to mind. Clemson RB CJ Spiller as well as DE’s Jason Pierre-Paul and Derrick Morgan would also probably be in the conversation.

Patriot fans are always concerned when Belichick trades down… it will be very interesting to see what they think if he should trade up.

NFL Trade Deadline: Nnamdi Asomugha on The Block?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

With the NFL Trade Deadline looming (October 20th), one big name usually comes on the market, like Roy Williams in 2008. Often times the deal isn’t completed, but every once in a great while, a blockbuster happens.

The name being floated out there right now is the Raiders’ uber-cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha is the league’s top corner, but his Raider-style contract makes a trade prohibitive. While he only is making $4.5 million in salary this year, his contract calls for close to $16 million in bonuses before playing next year. He might be willing to play for free if its not in Oakland though. Kidding aside, all of this becomes moot if there is no CBA extension and 2010 becomes an uncapped year.

According to PatsCap.com, the Patriots are around $5 million under the cap, which would allow the Patriots to bring Asomugha in with only minor disruptions. Perhaps the Raiders would accept a couple of 2010 2nd Rounders or their 2011 1st Rounder in exchange, although they will probably hold out for a king’s ransom. On the other hand, this is Al Davis here.

Nnamdi would look good in the Flying Elvis…

Patriots Signing Cleo Lemon?

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

According to Tim Graham of the 4-Letter, the Patriots are on the verge of signing veteran signal-caller Cleo Lemon. Lemon is best remembered forbeing the starting QB during much of the 1-15 season for the Dolphins in 2007, and as a 2-year veteran of the NFL All-Food Team.

If the Michael Vick to the Patriots weren’t dead yet, this should put a nail in that coffin. Lemon would provide a serviceable #3 QB to compete with second year Patriot QB Kevin O’Connell in the pre-season.

Michael Vick: Future Patriot?

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

With Michael Vick being released at 5am this morning, there is a ton of speculating about where he will end up playing his football… if at all.

One of the spots that people keep mentioning is New England. The Patriots have a successful history of rehabilitating “problem” players (Moss, Dillon) and certainly have the leadership to pull it off.

The question in our mind is if Bob and Myra Kraft want to deal with the PR fallout, but the reality is, everyone already hates the Patriots. What do they have to lose?

Check back for updates…

Pats Looking at Burgess

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Nick Caserio, aka “The New Scott Pioli”, told everyone at his recent draft recap press conference that the Patriots were open to exploring trades for a veteran linebacker. As needed with all things Bill Belichick, everyone downed that nugget with a heavy dose of salt and moved on. This time, however, the rumor has some legs.

John Clayton, aka “The Crypt Keeper”, is reporting that the Patriots and the Raiders have been talking about a trade for Derrick Burgess, who has played defensive end for the Patriots for the past four years. He totaled 38.5 sacks in his tenure with the silver and black, although 26 of those came in the first two years. Burgess has battled injuries the past two seasons.

Burgess, who weighs in at 260, seems to be a natural fit for the outside linebacker position for the 3-4. He will probably command a 2nd or 3rd round pick, although that might be diminished if he demands a new contract. Burgess is due to make $3.5 million in 2009 and wants a new deal.

Patriots Talking to the Law?

Friday, May 8th, 2009

According to Jets CB Darrell Revis, the Patriots are once again talking to former Patriot, Chief, and Jet CB Ty Law. We here at NE Patriots Draft hope that it stays just like that: talk.

With the departures of Rodney Harrison, Deltha O’Neal, and Ellis Hobbs, the defensive secondary is in the midst of a serious youth movement. Jonathan Wilhite, Terrence Wheatley, Brandon Meriweather, Patrick Chung, Darius Butler, and James Sanders are all well under 30 years of age and should be looking at some serious playing time this year.

No matter how much Ty Law “thinks” that he has in his tank, let’s not trade getting the Patriot youngsters out on the field for another aged veteran that may be past his second prime.

Cold Peppers, Taylor Heats Up

Monday, May 4th, 2009

The Julius Pepper saga, which has hung around through the Jay Cutler debacle, March Madness, and the 2009 NFL Draft, might finally be losing whatever steam it had left. We don’t feel like he would be a good investment for the Patriots, and hopefully someone else pays him $50 million guaranteed. Read more from Vic Carucci after the jump…

That story continues to baffle me, and I know a lot of other people feel the same way. The fact Peppers has yet to sign that tender offer simply paralyzes the process for him to be traded anywhere, if that’s what the Panthers want to do. The Panthers keep saying he’ll remain with them, but nothing from Peppers or his agent indicates that that will be the case. Frankly, with the draft behind us, it’s hard to see what kind of deal could be made for him that would make sense all the way around. I supposed the Niners have to be a possibility because of their extra first for next year.

However the Jason Taylor saga, nearly as long and tiresome as Peppers’, seems to be drawing to a close. Phinsider is reporting that two teams, as well as the Dolphins, are currently negotiating with the former All Pro defensive end. No word if the Patriots are one of the two mystery teams involved, but if the price is right, Taylor would be a valuable addition to the new-look Patriot defense. Peter King, for one, thinks it will happen, as he detailed in his MMQB column, “I think Jason Taylor will be a Patriot, unless Miami steps up to offer some real money.”
