2012 NFL Draft: Five “Forgotten” Potential First Rounders

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012
Vinny Curry Patriots NFL Draft

Why is no one talking about this Conference USA pass rusher?

NEPD Editor: Doug Kyed

Every year during draft season there are prospects who get dissected to death and those that fly under the radar. I want to talk about those forgotten prospects today.

Over the last few months we’ve talked enough about Michael Brockers, Ryan Tannehill, Janoris Jenkins and most of the sure thing first round picks. I wanted to talk about some of the guys who have become slightly unheralded over the last couple of months. Guys that draft analysts don’t seem to want to talk about or like talking about.

All of these guys have the potential to go in the first round, and they’re all potential fits for the Patriots.

2012 NFL Combine: First Impressions OL

2012 NFL Scouting Combine

Doug Kyed's thoughts on the first two days for the offensive line.

NEPD Editor: Doug Kyed

The combine officially began yesterday and some of the early results are coming in.

We get to finally see if the heights and weights some of these players were listed at were true. So far, we’ve got to see how long their arms are, how big their hands are and their bench press reps.

None of this stuff will make or break a player, but arm length is important for the offensive line and bench reps is a pretty good meter for how naturally strong a player is, especially if the reps are low.

Here are some notes on the offensive linemen:

Riley Reiff 2012 NFL Draft

Iowa OT Riley Reiff declared for the 2012 NFL Draft - could he be a Top 10 pick?

The Insight Bowl, featuring the Oklahoma Sooners and Iowa Hawkeyes, certainly gave NFL Draft scouts some insight into the futures of some 2012 NFL Draft prospects.

Kirk Ferentz Belichick

Nice Hoodie.

Much is often made of the connection between Iowa’s coach Kirk Ferentz and Bill Belichick, who coached together during Belichick’s time in Cleveland.

However, with the exception of a couple of undrafted free-agents and a 7th-round pick (OL, Mike Elgin), the connection has never produced a big splash on the Patriots roster, even though only USC and Florida have put more players in the NFL over the last few years.

This could be the year that the connection finally bears some fruit.

NEPD Prospect Preview: Week 6

Kenny Vaccaro Patriots NFL Draft

Safety Kenny Vaccaro is just one of the Texas NFL Draft prospects that I'm excited to be scouting this weekend.

I’ll be taking a look at some more great teams with some top-notch 2012 NFL Draft prospects this weekend.

Iowa vs Penn State and Oklahoma vs Texas are both matchups with some great defenders and some explosive pass-catchers. Make sure you check out the film room early next week to see the results of our scouting.

Film Room Live: Iowa vs Iowa State

Saturday, September 10th, 2011
Riley Reiff NFL Draft Patriots

Riley Reiff is just one of the two potential 1st-Round offensive linemen in this game.

As we previewed earlier this week, the Iowa State vs Iowa game features a large amount of legitimate 2012 NFL Draft prospects. We ran the multitude of Hawkeye draft prospects through the film room process last week, but seeing them against some BCS level talent will be invaluable in evaluating them.

On the other hand, Iowa State makes up for a lack of quantity with the quality of their prospects. Mammoth (6-6/340) offensive lineman Kelechi Osomele may end up being a Top 20 NFL Draft prospect in 2012.

We’ll be updating the post throughout the game and after, as we go back and fill in some of the stuff we missed live.
