The Patriots and Ravens met in Baltimore last September in what was one of the season’s most exciting games; unfortunately, Baltimore managed to escape with a narrow 31-30 in a game marred by meddling replacement officials. Fortunately, New England finished the season stronger than Baltimore did, earning the AFC’s second seed and consequently home-field advantage in tonight’s AFC Championship Game. With a win, the Patriots will be headed to New Orleans for their second straight Super Bowl appearance; a loss, on the other hand, would have Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and co. watching from home. Read on for ten keys to the most important game of New England’s season thus far.

The Patriots are poised for a rematch with the Baltimore Ravens next weekend in the AFC Championship Game after dispatching the Houston Texans via a 41-28 final score; New England lost three key contributors to injury in the game, which was significantly closer than the previous contest. Read on for five keys to this afternoon’s divisional round contest.

Lets put this out there right away. The Patriots played terrible and that is the main reason they lost. It’s not the replacement referees, it’s not the clutch last drive by Joe Flacco, it was the Patriots playing absolutely terrible in the fourth quarter.

With that, here are my three keys to the Patriots’s defeat.

In a matchup sure to be remembered for its dramatics as well as very visible officiating from the league’s replacement referees – a total of 24 penalties were called for 218 yards – Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker was able to convert a 27-yard attempt as time expired to give his team a 31-30 victory over the New England Patriots. New England drops 1-2 on the season, while Baltimore stands at 2-1. Tom Brady and Joe Flacco combined to pass for over 700 yards; both had impressive games, but it was ultimately Flacco who led his team downfield on the game’s final drive. Read on for more information regarding some of New England’s biggest storylines.

A week after losing to the Arizona Cardinals at the last second, the New England Patriots will travel to Baltimore for a matchup with the Ravens facing a very real possibility of falling to 1-2 on the season.

The Patriots were able to escape from last season’s AFC Championship Game with a narrow 23-20 victory over the Ravens, but are considered a slight underdog on Sunday night. That should come as no surprise after New England’s offense sputtered last week; offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ playcalling was puzzling, quarterback Tom Brady was unable to decipher Arizona’s coverages, the Patriots’ offensive line allowed Brady to be sacked four times, tight end Aaron Hernandez sprained his ankle early in the first quarter, and New England was uncharacteristically mistake-prone on special teams (punter Zoltan Mesko was blocked, and kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed a last-second field goal which would have secured a Patriots victory.)

Below are ten keys to Sunday night’s matchup with the Ravens, one of the most difficult opponents the Patriots will encounter all season.

The Patriots need to take the "sizzle" out of the Ravens defense on Sunday.

The anticipation for this week is killing me. Not only do I have the Ravens-Patriots game to look forward to, but I’m also going to be covering the Senior Bowl all next week (follow me on twitter for updates @dougkyed).

Consequently, this week has gone incredibly slow, like Dan Connolly returning a kickoff-slow. Like Tim Tebow’s throwing motion-slow. Like Chad Ochocinco’s learning curve-slow.

But the AFC Championship is finally bearing down on us and we have approximately 48 hours until I’ll be sitting on my parents couch five miles from the stadium with my heart racing, and of course, wearing my lucky Chung shirt.

Here are some things I’d like to see in Sunday afternoon’s game:
