On his second offensive drive against the Philadelphia Eagles’ first-team defense, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to converted 7-of-8 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown.

No. 12 didn’t hold much back in the Aug. 9 preseason opener.

After handing the ball off six consecutive times on New England’s first drive, Brady distributed the ball to four different receivers on his second drive. He hit free-agent acquisition Danny Amendola for six yards. He hit rookie second-round pick Aaron Dobson for 23 yards. He capped it off by hitting third-year running back Shane Vereen for 13 yards.

Yet over the course of a seven-play sequence, Brady hit another target four times.

That target was Kenbrell Thompkins.

His University of Nevada Wolf Pack teammates called him “Flint,” because all it took was one catch for him to fire up the offense. Now, his New England Patriots teammates call him “Sunshine,” because his long locks draw resemblance to Ronnie Bass from Remember the Titans.

But regardless of the nicknames he has been given, tight end Zach Sudfeld is trying to make his own name in the NFL. And that begins with him making New England’s 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie. (more…)

Watching two teams and a combined set of 180 players wasn’t an easy task during Day One of the Eagles-Patriots scrimmaging. However, with my main focus on the quarterbacks, receivers, and defensive backs, I was able to glean out some impressions from a difficult to keep up with practice.

With the calendar flipped to August, the New England Patriots are now encompassed in the rhythm of training camp. Before long, there will be joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Before long, there will be four preseason exhibition games to play.

And before long, the 90-man roster will be cut to 75 men, then 53.

The stakes are high and the room for error is thin. Because ultimately, 37 current Patriots will find themselves either on the physically unable to perform list, injured reserve or out of a job.

There is one more possible destination, however: the practice squad. (more…)

Cory Grissom devoted five seasons of football to the University of South Florida. And over that time, the defensive tackle known as “Pork Chop” started 40 of 46 career games.

But even after making second-team All-Big East as a redshirt senior in 2012, even after venturing to the Senior Bowl, and even after earning an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine, the 6’2”, 316-pound Bull did not hear is name called during April’s draft.

The New England Patriots took the field Tuesday afternoon for their fifth consecutive day of practice to open their 2013 training camp. The pads were on for the Patriots and the sun was shining bright as they practiced for two hours and 10 minutes.

Here’s what I took away from what was personally my second trip of the year to watch practice at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
