Patriots Roster Projection: Mike Loyko Version 4.0

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

Ron Brace may have solidified a roster spot with a strong training cam.

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

The Patriots made some news yesterday with the release of DT Jonathan Fanene, which shakes up most roster projections. On Monday night against the Eagles we got to take a long look at the second and third teams, with some players solidifying spots and some losing jobs. With two preseasons in the books here is how I project the Patriots roster to look in two weeks, based on what we’ve seen so far.

Nate Ebner has been a man of mystery since the moment he was drafted in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Many fans and draft analysts alike were scrambling for information on the former Ohio State Buckeye, and with Ebner missing the first few days of training camp, not a lot of questions were answered.

With Ebner back on the field, is his play worthy of cracking the Patriots final roster?

The New England Patriots spent two picks on tight ends in the 2010 NFL Draft: a second-round selection on Rob Gronkowski and a fourth-round choice on Aaron Hernandez.

The two combined for 87 catches, 1,109 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns as rookies and both players substantially improved their production in 2011, ending up making 169 catches for 2,237 yards and 24 touchdowns.

New England’s offensive scheme last season was heavily focused on getting both Gronkowski and Hernandez the ball as much as possible, yet nonetheless New England enters the 2012 season having added a number of tight ends to the roster, most notably Daniel Fells, Jake Ballard and Visanthe Shiancoe.

Patriots Defensive Line Standing Out at Training Camp

Chandler Jones Andre Carter

Have Chandler Jones, Jermaine Cunningham and the rest of the Patriots defensive line done enough to prevent Andre Carter from becoming a priority? (Photo: US Presswire)

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

It’s not a stretch to say that throughout the first week of camp, the Patriots defensive line and edge rushers, have looked liked the best positional groupings so far.

The Patriots went out this off-season and added some youth, athleticism and versatility to the positions and so far it looks like its paying dividends. With the defensive front looking strong and extremely deep, what does that mean for Andre Carter? Have we seen the last of Carter in a Patriots uniform?
