Every Friday this summer I’m doing a case study on the last ten years draft history of every conference in the FBS.

Through these case studies we’ll be able to answer which schools and conferences produce the most talent, the most busts, the most players at each position and much more.

I know that it’s a lot of information to digest, but there’s some very interesting findings during this first week of research which will become even more telling as each week progresses.

This week, I’m taking on the Pac-12. You can also read about the Mountain West, Big EastIndependents, C-USA, Big Ten, ACC and MAC.

New England Patriots: Break Out Candidates in 2012

Ras-I Dowling Patriots

Patriots fans are anxious to see if Dowling can stay healthy and live up to his potenial in 2012.

It’s July 16th, do you know what that means? We’re ten days removed from breaking out the shorts and shells!

Sure, the young 2012 Patriots roster is coming off a crushing Super Bowl loss, but hopefully that just increases their hunger to earn that illustrious ring.

Because this roster if chock-full of young players, there’s always hope that some of those present role players will turn into future stars, or at least reliable starters. I will be breaking down my top five break out candidates in today’s column.

Eric Reid: LSU Safety a Trade-Up Option for the Patriots in 2013

Eric Reid LSU Safety

The safety position is currently undergoing a re-evaluation in the NFL. In-the-box defenders geared towards defending the run are diminishing in value, while athletic, coverage-oriented safeties are in high demand.

The supply of safeties who are big enough to match up against modern tight ends as well as athletic enough to cover quick slot receivers lags severely behind the demand, forcing teams to invest heavily in the position; Tampa Bay used the seventh-overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft in order to ensure that they landed Alabama safety Mark Barron this past April.

Will LSU safety Eric Reid have a similar rise in the 2013 NFL Draft?

Alongside wide receiver Wes Welker and offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, starting safety Patrick Chung is considered one of New England’s most valuable impending free agents.

Chung, who is set to turn 25 years old in August, has established himself as one of New England’s best defensive players since being drafted with the Patriots’ top pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Boston Herald recently reported that New England has yet to discuss a contract extension with Chung, but it is expected that New England would be interested in re-signing Chung before he reaches the open market.

Of course, both the team and the player must be receptive to an extension, so a middle ground will have to be reached in order for the club to lock up Chung long-term.

Drafting Defensive Backs: A Patriots Case Study

Darius Butler Released

Believe it or not, Darius Butler was a prototypical Patriots defensive back draft pick.

NEPD Editor: Doug Kyed

Entering the 2012 NFL Draft, there seems to be one common sentiment among Patriots fans, “We need defensive backs!”

One of the chief reasons why the Patriots need defensive backs is their spotty history in the draft taking corners and safeties.

Throughout the twelve seasons Bill Belichick has been Head Coach, the Patriots have taken 21 defensive backs, four remain with the team.

I put together a spreadsheet containing all of those players vitals, hoping to come up with some patterns to possibly try to determine what the Patriots look for in a DB, and which players in the 2012 class they’ll potentially be looking at. (Thanks to NFLDraftScout.com and the Boston.com Draft Database for all combine results)

Here are some of the most interesting findings:

Whenever I’ve looked at the Patriots upcoming schedule recently, this is the game that keeps standing out. Would this be the Patriots’ biggest remaining challenge? Who will we actually see play in this game? Will we see a classic Andy Reid mistake? How will the Patriots deal with a scrambling QB?

With Michael Vick, Jeremy Maclin, Desean Jackson, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and now Nnamdi Asomugha all knicked up, this might be the best time for the Patriots to be facing off against Philly.

Here are some things I’ll be looking out for in Sunday’s game:
