Patriots vs Panthers : Player Spotlight

Friday, August 28th, 2015

We’re (almost) there.  Meaningful football is right around the corner – I promise.  In terms of meaningful football in the pre-season, tonight will be as good as it gets.  The third pre-season game is normally when starters get extended action into the second half.  Also, coaches will give specific looks to guys in competition running alongside the first team.

Last week we highlighted three position groups to watch against the Saints.  Today – a more specific look into what Patriots have the most to play for tonight.  Here are five Patriots I will be keeping a close eye on. (more…)

Patriots vs Saints Primer: Three Positional Groups to Watch

Saturday, August 22nd, 2015

As we move deeper into the preseason, roster clarity becomes key.  Preseason games can be a mess.  Full of players you’ve never heard of, sloppy play and announcers mispronouncing every third players name.

However through the chaos there are story lines to follow.  Let’s take a look at three position groups you should keep your eye on tonight.

Running Back

LeGarrette Blount, James White and Jonas Gray are three guys I feel confident will be there Week 1.  Brandon Bolden, due to his special teams ability as well as trust from Bill Belichick to protect Tom Brady on third down, is likely a shoe in as well.  With  Blount’s Week 1 suspension, this leaves the door open for one other player.  Enter : Dion Lewis. Tight End has been the position of conversation in New England ever since the team invested two relatively high picks in the 2010 NFL Draft selecting Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.  Tight End continues to be a big topic of discussion, as the Patriots made headlines this morning when they released youngster Tim Wright.

It may have caught some people as a surprise this morning as the Patriots moved on from 25 year old Tim Wright.  The former Rutgers’ product was acquired in the Logan Mankins trade last season, and caught six touchdowns last year for the Patriots.  (more…)

Re-drafting the 2011 NFL Draft

Where will these stars land in our re-draft? (Hint: they will not be waiting long in the Green Room).

Now that the draft has come and gone, the instant analysis is pouring in.  Who are the ‘Winners’ and ‘Losers’ are the big hot button topics discussed in draft talk nationwide.  But truly, how do we know who the true winners and losers are?

Fact is, we don’t. We make educated guesses, sure.  But at the end of the day none of us have a crystal ball.  The only thing better than a mock draft is a re-draft, and as the top players from the 2011 draft approach the end of their rookie deals, we’re going to take a look at the real winners of the 2011 draft. Eyes On the Competition : AFC East

The Patriots could find themselves in a tricky position if they start slow this year.

If you’re tired of reading about the dreaded ‘deflategate’ and how New England cuts another cornerback once a week, you have come to the right place.  Eyes On The Competition returns post-draft to breakdown the AFC East, and how things could wind up next year after the draft makeover.

The Tom Brady suspension is still up in the air, but it is safe to assume he will at least miss SOME time.  One game?  Two games?  Personally that’s how I think it will fall.  But who knows, four games is still in play with Captain Touchback hearing the appeal. (more…)

CJ Sousa’s 2015 Patriots Specific Big Board

Which players made my big board and what big names were left off?

The national holiday that is the NFL Draft is just around the corner.  If you’re anything like me, you have looked at 4,291 mock drafts, 782 big boards and filled out some countless mock drafts on your own.  Not because you are actually thinking that is how the real draft will go, as we know it takes just one trade to throw a whole entire mock draft off.

It’s kind of like the movie Jack Frost.  Snow dad is better than no dad.  Truly, fake NFL drafts are better than no NFL drafts.  Rest easy fans, the real deal is around the corner. (more…)

Potential Patriots: LB Denzel Perryman

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

NEPD Staff Writer: Adam Bogdan

Continuing my Potential Patriots series, I decided to look at Miami’s middle linebacker Denzel Perryman based on the feedback from readers.

The Patriots have certainly struggled this year against the run at times, and their linebacking corps may be one of the shallowest positions on the team. While Jerod Mayo and Jamie Collins have exceptional athleticism, and with Dont’a Hightower becoming a pass rusher, there lacks a physical presence in the middle of the defense that can stuff the run with ferocity and fearlessness. That is what Perryman can do.
