Less than two weeks until the 2013 NFL draft, we are in an unusual situation: the draft board has not gotten a whole lot clearer than it was a few weeks ago. That said, speculation is running more rampant than ever.

In this mock draft, I continued to look at how recent trades and free-agent signings have affected teams’ draft strategies, while projecting four possible first-round trades that shook up the draft order.

The New England Patriots are among the teams in a different situation in this mock draft. With the Patriots likely to be giving up their third-round draft pick for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, they would address their position of greatest need but also lose a valuable selection, leaving them without any picks in Rounds 3-6. With just two picks in the 2013 NFL draft before Round 7, the Patriots are among the teams who could make a deal before making any picks at all.

Pro Day Spotlight: USC, LSU, Texas

Friday, March 29th, 2013

All eyes were on Matt Barkley this week during his passing workout at USC’s pro day.

NEPD Staff Writer: Dan Hope

The pro day schedule is nearly complete, but the last full week of pro days was packed with major programs and star talent. The highest-profile pro day of them all, however, was USC’s pro day on Wednesday, where all eyes were on quarterback Matt Barkley, hoping to prove himself as a top-two quarterback in the 2013 draft class while also trying to prove his health following a shoulder injury that ended his senior season early.

Matt Elam has a lot to prove at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine.

Fans and sports media tend to get more excited about the NFL Combine than the average NFL team. Sure, teams still fall victim to so-called workout warriors (See: Poe, Dontari 2012), but the reality is most teams rely more heavily on what they see on the field than in this workouts.

What makes the combine great is players will surprise you. We knew Chris Johnson was fast at East Carolina, but all-time fast? His workout took him from a second round pick into the first with his explosiveness.
Workouts, whether outstanding or underwhelming, will usually make teams go back and look at the tape. You want the workout to underscore what you’re seeing on film.

The combine gives players a chance to show they have better speed than their film indicates, or perhaps they’ve gotten stronger and put on weight since they were playing.

While it isn’t the be all and end all, the combine does mean a lot at stake for the 300 or so college prospects who are lucky enough to attend. We took a look at prospects with the most to gain and the most to lose with their performance at the combine starting next week.

For the third week in a row NEPD is scouting and breaking down the University of Southern California football team, which is loaded with NFL prospects. This week they face Stanford, which has it’s share of quality prospects.

How did Matt Barkley look against better competition, after shredding two soft defenses in a row? How did Stanford’s defensive prospects look against this high powered offense?

For the second week in a row I get to watch the best offense in college football take on an opponent they should thrash. While Syracuse struggled to produce NFL talent in recent years they have two intriguing prospects this season.

Unfortunately LT prospect Justin Pugh did not play in the game, leaving QB Ryan Nassib as the top Syracuse prospect in this game. How did Nassib fare against a very good USC defense?

This game is the classic David vs. Goliath. On one hand there is USC which is loaded up and stocked with NFL Draft prospects, many of whom will be selected in the first couple rounds. On the other hand you have Hawaii, who will be lucky if any of the eligible players play in the NFL.

Who did the prospects fare in the game? Check out our scouting notes on the game here.
