The New England Patriots have a number of positions of need they should look to address — wide receiver, pass-rush defensive tackle, cornerback, coverage linebacker — and currently only five draft picks to work with to attempt to fill those needs.

The Patriots aren’t a team that will allow their draft strategy to be handicapped by needs, however, and among those needs, the only one where their need for a starter is desperate is at wide receiver. Therefore, while the Patriots should be expected or at least projected to use at least one of their early draft picks on a receiver, the draft board in New England could be wide open to talent at other positions if the Patriots believe in the value on the board.

New England’s running game was one of the most impressive aspects of their team in 2012, but nonetheless they remain at least somewhat interested in this year’s class of running backs; thus far, they have conducted private workouts with a number of this year’s prospects, with at least cursory interest shown in what is shaping up to be a deep class of runners. While drafting a running back in the first or second round is unlikely, there are plenty of mid-to-late-round prospects that may have New England’s attention. Prospect rankings and values are provided by FRX.

Pro Day Spotlight: USC, LSU, Texas

Friday, March 29th, 2013

All eyes were on Matt Barkley this week during his passing workout at USC’s pro day.

The pro day schedule is nearly complete, but the last full week of pro days was packed with major programs and star talent. The highest-profile pro day of them all, however, was USC’s pro day on Wednesday, where all eyes were on quarterback Matt Barkley, hoping to prove himself as a top-two quarterback in the 2013 draft class while also trying to prove his health following a shoulder injury that ended his senior season early.

College football. For some it is a religion. For others, merely a minor league for the NFL. Either way, I’m incredibly glad to be evaluating NFL Draft prospects with new games.

Here are my notes on 15 prospects from the rainy South Carolina vs Vanderbilt game.

2013 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: Auburn vs South Carolina (2011)

South Carolina featured two first round picks in the 2012 NFL Draft, cornerback Stephon Gilmore and defensive lineman Melvin Ingram. For the 2013 NFL Draft, the Gamecocks just might have two more top picks, although the first round might be stretching it.

Auburn has its own share of future NFL players, although their best player – running back Michael Dyer – has since transferred to Arkansas State.
