The 2013 New England Patriots defensive line was one of adaptation.

It was one of many faces and many alignments. And it was one composed of 15 players, forged by attrition.

For the collection of former draft picks and undrafted free agents, waiver claims and veteran free agents, it was about being greater than the sum of their parts. For head coach Bill Belichick, defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and position coach Patrick Graham, on the other hand, it was about being interchangeable.

From Week 1 through Week 17, the New England’s defensive line was just that. But its identity remained unknown. There was no true first-team. There was no true base defense.

Its contributors and alignments shifted with each opponent, with each snap. (more…)

The “Turk” was busy between the Aug. 28 and Aug. 31 roster cutdown deadlines, as dozens of then-New England Patriots were asked to bring their playbooks to head coach Bill Belichick.

Yet while many of whom cleaned out their lockers and saw their nameplates removed, not every Patriots cut packed up and departed from Foxborough, Mass.

Six of whom stayed around, and another two joined them on Patriots practice squad – an eight-man roster filled with non-vested players practicing for an opportunity to play.

Here’s how they earned their spots.

Even though it was a lowly preseason game, I’ve watched every snap three or four times now and I feel like I’ve fully dissected the action. There were good and bad things to take away from the 7-6 win, but today I’ll concentrate on all the good things.

The New England Patriots enter the season well-stocked with talent; unfortunately, only 53 of their players are eligible to make the opening day roster. A number of the players on roster are eligible for the practice squad, however, in what is expected to be a cutthroat competition.
