With three effective starting linebackers in Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, and Dont’a Hightower, the New England Patriots may be unlikely to draft a linebacker high in this month’s 2013 NFL Draft. However, they could use additional depth at the position, and, should Brandon Spikes leave in free agency next year, a future starter could also be in the cards. The Russell Athletic Bowl was the first game of the 2012-2013 bowl season to go to overtime, but it wasn’t much of a thriller. Both offenses were out of rhythm throughout the game: only one offensive touchdown was scored including in overtime, Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas and Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova both struggled with accuracy and mistakes throughout the game, and a Russell Athletic Bowl record of 21 punts was set.

Thomas did nothing to help his sinking draft stock, while the defensive standouts were senior linebackers Khaseem Greene of Rutgers and Bruce Taylor of Virginia Tech. More detailed evaluations of each top draft prospect’s performance:

Among Friday’s three bowl games, the one likely to generate the most interest from NFL scouts is the Russell Athletic Bowl, featuring the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Virginia Tech Hokies. With some very talented defensive prospects on both teams, this should be especially true for the New England Patriots.

Ray Graham is the top senior prospect in the Big East Conference.

No conference will look more different than the Big East over the course of the next three years due to realignment throughout Division One college football. 2012 will be a bridge year of sorts with West Virginia leaving, Temple joining and Boise State among other teams joining in 2013.

The Big East produced a number of very good NFL Draft prospects last year including Patriots 1st round pick Chandler Jones of Syracuse. How will realignment and graduation effect the conference’s draftable prospects?
