Patriots vs Chiefs: Six Keys to Victory

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

With a night to register last night’s home victory, one thought resonates with me, has a team ever scored 34 points and looked less impressive on offense?

Trust me, I’m not being negative, if anything it’s impressive that his team can win 34-3 without a top notch offensive effort and especially without a prototypical Wes Welker game. Coming into the year, everyone talked about how many weapons Brady had on this offense. That’s come true to a certain extent, but he tends to key in on the targets he knows best: Welker, Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez and Deion Branch.

Everyone would like to see another wide receiver break out, but frankly, if this team can run as well as they did last night, they won’t need breakout roles from Chad Ochocinco or Taylor Price.

Without further ado, here are my six keys to victory over the Chiefs:

With the toughest part of the schedule down, the Patriots have a funfetti flavored cakewalk left. The next team with a winning record that the Patriots face is week 17 against the Bills at home.

And even with that lone “tough” game, the Bills could have a losing record by that point, or the Patriots could have already clinched the division. I’m getting ahead of myself, but a victory like last night’s will do that to you.

Much has been made all season about the Patriots defensive troubles. By my count, the Patriots have thrown together four strong defensive performances in their last five games: The Jets twice, the Giants (other than the last drive) and the Cowboys. Last night’s was perhaps their best.

Here are my six keys to victory…

Giants vs Patriots Gronkowski

Rob Gronkowski's late touchdown wasn't enough to lift the Patriots to victory.

There was some discussion on Twitter today about who was to blame for this loss: offense, defense, special teams, coaching, etc. This wasn’t your typical full team loss, but it was on the whole team.

For the first three quarters, the defense was outstanding and for the last quarter the offense came up when it mattered most. This game seemed to come down to specific plays more than any other New England loss this season.

Therefore, for my keys to this week’s defeat, I’ll be getting pretty specific on some of them. This game really seemed to come down to a few key plays:

Patriots lose to Steelers

The Patriots will need to come together as a defensive unit to salvage their hopes for another Superbowl run.

Even the most optimistic Patriots fans out there have to notice the holes in this team at this point, right? I’m a pretty even keeled sports fan.

Through years of talking to sports fans (typically Boston sports fans), there’s nothing I hate more than the “sky is falling” sports fan who immediately wants to blow up the team, blow up the coaching staff, etc. etc. after a big loss.

That being said, this 2011 Patriots team has some major issues.

Rob Ryan Patriots

Hopefully, the Patriots won't see "The Sheepdog" for a long time.

It was a great game, but I’m definitely hoping we don’t have to see Rob Ryan again until next season when he’s a head coach somewhere.

All in all, it was vintage Tom Brady and vintage Patriots. Sometimes games aren’t easy and I think it’s good for a team to have to go through some adversity. Brady wasn’t playing at his best against Dallas, but it was really nice to see the defense bail him out, rather than vice versa.

Wes Welker Patriots Jets

For once this year, Wes Welker wasn't the main offensive weapon.

What a relief. The defense stepped up and the offense continues to pile up the points. Read on to see the six keys to the Patriots victory.

Patriots vs Raiders: Keys to Victory

With a day to digest the Patriots latest triumph, I’ve grown to be far more optimistic than I was immediately following it. Of course, watching the Jets last night might have helped up that optimism leading into next week but still, what we saw yesterday was a classic, almost vintage, Brady-Belichick Patriots victory.

The Patriots stopped what they needed to, did a decent job of clock control, and played a bend but don’t break defense.
