The New England Patriots’ best chance to improve their roster is less than three weeks away, when the 2013 NFL Draft begins.

With only five total picks in this year’s draft and only three within the first six rounds, it is important for the Patriots to maximize their selections for both value and need, especially with their picks in Round 1-3.

As part of the “A Prospect For Every Round” series, we previously examined some potential defensive end targets whom the New England Patriots may be interested in drafting; today, we’ll look at some other defensive line prospects the Patriots could target, whether they are defensive tackles, nose tackles, or five-technique defensive ends. Read on to find out who may be on New England’s mind as the 2013 NFL Draft approaches. As always, prospect rankings and values are provided by FRX.

Jonathan Cyprien 2013 NFL Draft

FIU safety Jonathan Cyprien certainly made his mark at the 2013 Senior Bowl. Is he a potential fit for the Patriots?

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

The exciting and busy Senior Bowl week wrapped up with the conclusion of yesterday’s game. It’s now time to reflect on the week that was and look at all the players scouted down here in terms of fits for the New England Patriots.

Over the course of the week it was clear there are many players who could fit what the Patriots need, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Here are 15 players that fit  with the Patriots based on the week in Mobile and the needs of the team.

Kawann Short Scouting Report

Kawann Short can be a force in the middle.

NEPD Staff Writer: Dan Hope

The fullest day of the bowl season — New Year’s Day — is finally upon us, and the action all begins with the Heart of Dallas Bowl at noon, featuring the Purdue Boilermakers versus the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

While this game does not have the overall strength of draft prospects that many of the later games in the day, there are a few players participating in their final collegiate game who the New England Patriots should be keeping a close eye on Tuesday.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Updated January 3rd, 2013

1. Kansas City Chiefs
Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia (SCOUTING REPORT)
There isn’t an Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III in this draft class, just like most years. That isn’t to say that this class of quarterbacks doesn’t have talent – they’ll just need a little more development.

Smith has phenomenal touch down the field and is comfortable with pressure in his face, two things that the Chiefs have lacked with Matt Cassel under center. Kansas City could also take the best player available here and target a second tier quarterback (Matt Barkley, Ryan Nassib, Mike Glennon, Zac Dysert) with their second round pick.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Updated December 18, 2012

1. Kansas City Chiefs
Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia (SCOUTING REPORT)
Matt Cassel isn’t cutting it. Brady Quinn isn’t the guy. Draft yourself the most talented quarterback in this class, be patient, and build around him. To me, that guy is Geno Smith.

There are options at quarterback if the Chiefs trade down or move back into the first round (Matt Barkley, Ryan Nassib, Mike Glennon, Zac Dysert), but I feel strongly about how good Smith can be.
