2014 New England Patriots: Final Roster Projection

Friday, August 29th, 2014
Aaron Dobson eased concerns about his injured foot last night.

Aaron Dobson’s roster spot is secure, but there’s still plenty of uncertainity on the team.

The preseason ended last night in the Meadowlands with a 16-13 loss to the New York Giants and with roster cuts due on Sunday, it was the final opportunity to earn a roster spot. At least 22 players will be cut from the roster between now and Saturday afternoon, even after final cuts are completed more transactions will follow as the Patriots piece together their 2014 roster. Last night we learned a lot about the players who played, but we also learned a lot about the players Bill Belichick decided to sit out. As we approach final cuts a few things are clear. This is a much deeper roster than last year, especially on the backend, and this team is not without areas of weakness. Here’s how I project the initial 53 man roster to shake out.

Re-Ranking the Patriots Roster with Two Weeks until Roster Cuts

Malcolm Butler has improved his chances of making the roster more than anyone.

Prior to the start of training camp I ranked the Patriots roster to examine where each player stood and to evaluate their chances of making the final 53 man team. Now that training camp is over and there’s less than two weeks until the first round of cuts, it’s time to re-examine where everyone stands once again. Which players have moved off the bubble and onto the roster? Which players elevated their stock the most over the last month? Did any Patriots players play their way off the roster? All these questions are answered as I re-rank the Patriots roster from #90 to #1.

In a game that seemed as if it was never going to end because of penalty flags, the Patriots came away with a win over the Eagles 42-35 in their second preseason match up of the year.  Many top players, including Tom Brady, Logan Mankins, Darrelle Revis, and others, saw their first action after sitting out during the first preseason game against Washington in which they lost.

With the return of these players, it came as no surprise that the  Patriots looked much smoother in all three phases of the game. According to Coach Belichick in his conference call on Saturday, there were many positives on film to take away from Friday nights game.

Patriots vs. Eagles Post Game Thoughts and Analysis

Friday, August 15th, 2014
Ryan Mallett bounced back and showed he's here to stay.

Ryan Mallett bounced back nicely tonight and showed he’s here to stay.

Tom Brady saw his first action of the pre-season and 155 days after agreeing to terms with the Patriots, Darrelle Revis was on the field playing in a Patriots uniform. After a somewhat sloppy and non-entertaining pre-season game vs. Washington, the Patriots had plenty to improve upon and took the field Friday night looking to do just that.

These are the games where players distinguish themselves and players either continue to build on early camp momentum or fizzle out. Who stood out and who struggled vs. the Eagles?

Patriots vs. Redskins: Thoughts and Analysis

Thursday, August 7th, 2014

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

After 200 days of waiting the Patriots were finally back on the field and playing tackle football. For Patriots fans that hoped to see Darrelle Revis in game action for the first time, we’ll have to wait a little bit longer.

Revis, Tom Brady and the majority of starters sat out the entire game, but there was still plenty to learn from the season’s first preseason game. Who stood out, who disappointed, and who surprised? Here are my takeaways from tonight’s game.

Finding the Value in Patriots Second-Round QB Jimmy Garoppolo

By the time other positions are addressed, it’s often too late to handle the most important one.

Head coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots acknowledged that on Friday night, selecting Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the 62nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

To some, it was a great reach.

Alternatives in Iowa tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz and outside linebacker Christian Kirksey were waiting, as was USC center Marcus Martin, Oregon State defensive end Scott Crichton, and Notre Dame nose tackle Louis Nix III. Each had their merit as a top-tier available player; each had the potential to become a Patriot. But the Patriots’ draft board was assembled differently.

To them, it was a great find. (more…)
