It’s never been about size or straight-line speed for James White. For the 5’10”, 205-pound running back, who clocked a 4.57-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, it’s been about what’s not measured by tape, scale or stopwatch.

Vision, patience and balance.

Those are the tools White countered with when the competition caught up. He may never again be the most powerful player on the football field. He’ll likely never be the fastest one, either.

In a sense, he doesn’t have to be.

The 22-year-old Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native has a way of seeing rush lanes before they present themselves. And whether it be on a handoff, a direct snap, a reception or a kick return, he has revealed the timeliness, the low center of gravity and the short-area quickness to get through them.

The fourth-round draft pick has continued to get through them as a member of the New England Patriots this summer. (more…)

There wasn’t any tackling when the New England Patriots opened training camp on Thursday morning. But James White tackled the opportunities he was given during the shorts and shells practice.

As a fourth-round draft choice out of Wisconsin’s rushing committee, White knows that it’s about finding a role within those opportunities. For him, it’s about finding a way to get on the field among the likes of running backs Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden, Jonas Gray, Stephen Houston and Roy Finch.

The 5’10”, 205-pound rookie made strides towards doing so on day one of practice. (more…)

The New England Patriots’ offseason roster delves eight deep at the running back position. But even after Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden, fullback James Develin and first-year player Jonas Gray, viable competition remains.

It comes in the form of rookies Stephen Houston, James White and Roy Finch.

Only one of whom was selected in May’s draft, yet each of whom carries the serviceability to warrant a 53-man roster selection.

The reality, though, is that not all of whom will. There are only 11 offensive players on the field at a time, and there’s only one football to go around. And given the sheer volume of candidates in New England’s wide-open rushing committee, taking part in both will be a tall order this summer.

Each will have to carve a role.

Based on the ways in which the trio was utilized in college, however, doing so won’t be far outside the realm of possibility. (more…)
