The New York Jets ran the ball 43 times against the New England Patriots last Thursday night. In the process, 218 rushing yards were gained, and that output marked the most a Jets team had registered versus a Patriots team since 1990.

It could have been the four days of preparation. It could have been the fact Rob Ninkovich and Vince Wilfork had combined for 288 defensive snaps since Week 6. It could have been alignment and tackling technique. Or, it could have simply been the urgency of a 1-5 Jets squad on the road versus a division rival.

Whatever was at play, 14 of New York’s carries went through the right B- and C-gaps of the offensive line to the tune of 87 yards while New England fought for containment. (more…)

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Dan Hope’s Final Projections

Geno Smith Scouting Report

While many mock drafts have Geno Smith falling down the draft board, he is projected to go No. 2 overall here. (USA Today Sports Images)

Final Update: 4/24, 11:30 p.m. ET

The day of the 2013 NFL Draft is finally here, when all the speculation will come to an end in a draft that is sure to be full of reaches, steals and surprise picks.

The actual draft is likely to destroy our mock drafts even more than usual this year. Less than 24 hours until the Kansas City Chiefs go on the clock, who they will select at the No. 1 overall pick remains uncertain, though Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel and Central Michigan left tackle Eric Fisher appear to be the most likely choices.

As a result, you should be able to find a wide variety of mock drafts not only here on NEPatriotsDraft, but throughout the NFL Draft Sites Network and the World Wide Web. Here’s my own, unique take on how the first three rounds of the draft could, hypothetically, play out.

It’s crunch time. The 2013 NFL draft is just days away, and hundreds of prospects are waiting to hear their name called. With all the player meetings, interviews and private workouts, it’s a challenge to see where a team’s interests really lie. So who will go where?

Here is one scenario: A two-round mock with a few trades included.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Updated Projections As Free Agency Shifts Draft Strategies

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

Geno Smith’s draft projection is on the rise following West Virginia’s pro day.

Updated 3/21

For those of us who take the task of producing mock drafts throughout the year, the free-agency period is a game-changer. Just a week into free agency, many previous mock draft projections have had to be completely scrapped, as teams’ projected draft strategies have changed with free agents changing hands from old to new teams.

In addition to free agency changing the personnel needs of each teams, some prospects’ draft stocks are also rising and falling with their pro day performances.

Pro Day Spotlight: Alabama, Oregon, Geno Smith

Jesse Williams Alabama

Jesse Williams proved his status as a big man who can run at Alabama’s pro day.

The Alabama Crimson Tide and Oregon Ducks finished the 2012 college football season ranked as the top two teams in the nation. Both programs, which have a number of stars from their successful teams now in line to be selected in the 2013 NFL draft, held their pro days earlier this week.

Alabama’s pro day was held in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Wednesday, while Oregon’s was in Eugene, Ore. on Thursday. Thanks to ESPN3’s coverage streamed online, I was able to watch portions of each pro day. While the coverage unfortunately did not show much of the positional drills from either workouts, there were players at both that stood out with their measurable performances.

Could this talented defensive back fall to the Patriots at the end of round one in the 2013 NFL Draft?

Now that the draft order is essentially set and underclassmen have had to declare, it’s prudent to start looking at potential scenarios for the draft. This early, particularly before free agency gets going and the offseason workouts for the prospects have happened, these types of projections are more about finding 32 players who are most likely to be drafted in the first round than they are for accuracy.

You can determine what the needs for each team will be based on the roster, and get a feel for who might be there at various points in the draft. This is a difficult draft to project right now because teams are split on many of the elite prospects and the important positions like quarterback. While there may only be one or two quarterbacks with first round grades, we could see three or four taken in the first round and maybe even six taken in the top 50.

It’s early, but everyone loves a mock draft.
