We haven’t reached Wild Card weekend in the playoffs yet, but it’s that time of year where we begin to look forward to the offseason. The Patriots aren’t a team that generally spends a lot of money in the offseason outside of signings like Adalius Thomas.

The Patriots do have notable players entering free agency, wide receivers Wes Welker and Julian Edelman, offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, cornerback Aqib Talib, running back Danny Woodhead and safety Patrick Chung. Should they be re-signed?

What is Brian Hoyer’s value? (Photo: US Presswire)

NEPD Editor: Doug Kyed

Where does Jeff Demps fit in? Where does the OL stand? Will Hoyer get traded?

Those are some of the questions I’ll be answering in my weekly “Too Long For Twitter” Friday mailbag where I take questions from Twitter that warrant, deserve or need answers longer than 140 characters

If you have a question about anything, tweet it to me @DougKyedNEPD, and I’ll try to include it in the column on Friday. If you aren’t on Twitter, feel free to throw in a question in the comments section.

Bobby Carpenter

If there’s one thing the Patriots and Bill Belichick have excelled at time and time again, it’s pulling free agents off the street and making them into high impact players.

The Patriots seem to find at least one player every year that no one else noticed or wanted whether it’s a rookie undrafted free agent or veteran. This offseason, Belichick seemed to sign every veteran player he could find to increase the depth on the Patriots roster.

One of those players was linebacker and former first round “bust” Bobby Carpenter. Let’s see how Carpenter may fit into the Patriots defense this year.

The New England Patriots spent two picks on tight ends in the 2010 NFL Draft: a second-round selection on Rob Gronkowski and a fourth-round choice on Aaron Hernandez.

The two combined for 87 catches, 1,109 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns as rookies and both players substantially improved their production in 2011, ending up making 169 catches for 2,237 yards and 24 touchdowns.

New England’s offensive scheme last season was heavily focused on getting both Gronkowski and Hernandez the ball as much as possible, yet nonetheless New England enters the 2012 season having added a number of tight ends to the roster, most notably Daniel Fells, Jake Ballard and Visanthe Shiancoe.

Visanthe Shiancoe opted to sign with the New England Patriots today after considering alternative offers from the Seattle Seahawks as well as the Philadelphia Eagles; the deal is reportedly worth $1.2 million over one year, with $400,000 in guaranteed money.

Shiancoe, who turned 32 in June, is entering his tenth season in the NFL after spending his first four years in New York and the previous five in Minnesota.

How will Jonathan Fanene contribute for the Patriots in 2012?

NEPD Staff Writer: Matthew Jones

Bill Belichick evidently saw upgrading the defensive line as a major area of need this past offseason, investing heavily first through free agency and then in the draft.

New England attempted to sign versatile run-stuffer Red Bryant, but Bryant eventually opted to re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks on a long-term deal; New England quickly brought former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene into the fold with a three-year, $12 million contract ($3.85 million guaranteed) following Bryant’s decision.
