2012 New England Patriots: Versatility Helps Build Depth

If there’s one thing Bill Belichick has proven over the years, it’s that if you aren’t going to be a star on the New England Patriots, you better damn be versatile.

Last year, Belichick may have gone over the edge with his love for versatility lining Julian Edelman up at cornerback, Matthew Slater at safety, Logan Mankins at left tackle, Nate Solder at tight end and more.

This year, the Patriots have acquired even more versatile players, and I’ll try to break down all of the positions they can play here. I avoided using players whose versatility is limited to non-return special teams, and also players who just play multiple versions of the same position.

Who wins the position battle between Deion Branch and Donte Stallworth? When are the NFL refs coming back? More importantly, when is Brian Waters coming back?!

Those are some of the questions I’ll be answering in my weekly “Too Long For Twitter” Friday mailbag where I take questions from Twitter that warrant, deserve or need answers longer than 140 characters

If you have a question about anything, tweet it to me @DougKyedNEPD, and I’ll try to include it in the column on Friday. If you aren’t on Twitter, feel free to throw in a question in the comments section.

If there’s one thing the Patriots and Bill Belichick have excelled at time and time again, it’s pulling free agents off the street and making them into high impact players.

The Patriots seem to find at least one player every year that no one else noticed or wanted whether it’s a rookie undrafted free agent or veteran. This offseason, Belichick seemed to sign every veteran player he could find to increase the depth on the Patriots roster.

One of those players was linebacker and former first round “bust” Bobby Carpenter. Let’s see how Carpenter may fit into the Patriots defense this year.

Tonight I got the unique opportunity to cover the Patriots in stadium training camp from inside the press box. I got a last minute call and hit a block of traffic, but I still found some valuable nuggets to share.

Here are some notes from the public practice:

On Saturday and Sunday I was among the 14,000 attendees at Patriots training camp carefully watching all 89 players on the current Patriots roster.

After watching each drill and trying to gauge all of the new talent on the Patriots roster, I thought it was time for my first roster prediction of the 2012 preseason.

If you wanted to look over all of my thoughts this past weekend, feel free to go through my twitter timeline.

Here’s how I think the Patriots roster will shake out for week 1:
