Today Darius Butler became the next in the line of recently drafted Patriot cornerbacks to be released. Here is why.
After completing another exhaustive exercise of coming up with what I think would be the most productive final roster for the New England Patriots, I’m pretty sure that Nick Caserio and company are going to have more than their fair sure of sleepless nights in the next few weeks.
Let us know how you would change things if you were GM.
“It finally clicked… Things just seemed easy… The game seemed to slow down…” – All phrases uttered by players that showed a significant change in their skills, or what some call, a breakout.

According to WEEI, the Patriots have signed 41st pick overall Darius Butler to a 4-year contract. Monetary figures were not disclosed as of yet. This information was also mentioned on Drew Rosenhaus’ twitter feed, who happens to be Butler’s agent.
Butler, who was a star cornerback for the UConn Huskies, looks to be in line to compete with second-year man Jonathan Wilhite for the nickelback position. Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden, both brought in during free-agency, are the likely opening-day starters.
Four years is the maximum contract length for a 2nd-rounder under the current rules. Picks 1-16 can be signed to a six year deal, while picks 17-32 can be signed to a five year deal.
Rich Ohrnberger, a fourth-round pick by the Patriots, is the only other Patriot rookie to have signed at present.

The Patriots have selected Darius Butler, CB, from UConn. Darius has great feet and fluid hips, although his tackling is a bit suspect. Expect Darius to contribute as a nickel back during the 2009 season.
Head Coach Bill Belichick spent most of his time with the defensive backs at UCONN’s pro-day on Wednesday. As Belichick gazed upon the field, he couldn’t help but notice a certain defensive back that was playing above everyone else. Darius Butler, who has shot up draft boards after a fluid performance at the NFL combine, continued his rise in the workout at Storrs, CT.
Butler (5’10″-183lbs), isn’t a physical guy, but his 4.38 speed, 40″+ vertical, and incredibly loose hips make him a physical specimen. He can also play football a little bit. The Huskie corner wasn’t challenged much in 2008, having opponents give him the Deion treatment game after game.
Butler’s skillset and physical makeup make him ideal for off-coverage, which the Patriots often employ on the outside. He can struggle when you ask him to press bigger receivers, but with some of the Patriots recent acquisitions, bigger WR’s will have Springs and Bodden on them. Having a young corps of corners in Ellis Hobbs, Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite, and Darius Butler would be an enviable position to be in.
Even with the Patriots addition of Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden to the fold this March, don’t be surprised to see this DB become the Patriots’ newest DB come this April’s draft.
