58 Defensive Line Combinations: A 2013 Patriots Personnel Study

Friday, June 6th, 2014

The defensive line of the 2013 Patriots shifted in waves. Its components changed by the week, and in some cases, by the snap. (NFL Game Rewind)

The 2013 New England Patriots defensive line was one of adaptation.

It was one of many faces and many alignments. And it was one composed of 15 players, forged by attrition.

For the collection of former draft picks and undrafted free agents, waiver claims and veteran free agents, it was about being greater than the sum of their parts. For head coach Bill Belichick, defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and position coach Patrick Graham, on the other hand, it was about being interchangeable.

From Week 1 through Week 17, the New England’s defensive line was just that. But its identity remained unknown. There was no true first-team. There was no true base defense.

Its contributors and alignments shifted with each opponent, with each snap. (more…)

Patriots Roster Comparison: 2011 vs. 2012

The 2012 NFL season is beckoning, the Patriots have cut their roster down to 53 players and there’s plenty of new additions. There’s only one thing left to do, compare this year’s team to last year’s Super Bowl runner ups.

Obviously the week 1 roster isn’t finalized for the Patriots, so all of this may become moot by early afternoon.

If the Week 1 2011 Patriots matched up against the Week 1 2012 Patriots, who gets the edge? Let’s take sides.

Patriots Defensive Line Standing Out at Training Camp

It’s not a stretch to say that throughout the first week of camp, the Patriots defensive line and edge rushers, have looked liked the best positional groupings so far.

The Patriots went out this off-season and added some youth, athleticism and versatility to the positions and so far it looks like its paying dividends. With the defensive front looking strong and extremely deep, what does that mean for Andre Carter? Have we seen the last of Carter in a Patriots uniform?

In April of 2011, Patriots fans were clamoring to draft pass rushers, their wish finally came true, a year later.

Bill Belichick & co. spent valuable resources retooling their pass rush using first round picks on DE Chandler Jones and LB/situational pass rusher Dont’a Hightower and a third round pick on Arkansas DE Jake Bequette.

So where does the productive former Razorback fit in the Patriots new front 7?

Andre Carter’s performance in 2011 was a revelation, both for Carter and the New England Patriots.

However, training camp is rapidly approaching and little progress has been made on a new contract – is there still room for Carter on the Patriots roster?

That game lived up to all of its hype, for Patriots fans at least.

I was very nervous going into this game, but I also knew that the Patriots matched up against the Broncos about as well as any team in the league. As all football fans know, sometimes stats and logic get thrown out the window, especially when it involves Tim Tebow.

Well, this time it didn’t. A very scary first quarter quickly turned into a very encouraging, turnover filled second half eventually leading to a hat and t-shirt game!

Here are some notes from the game:

Match-ups To Watch: Kansas City

The makeshift Chiefs (4-5) come to town just as the pieces in the AFC East fall in favor of the Patriots (6-3). This past week delivered two Jets (5-5) losses and a Bills (5-5) loss at the hands of the Dolphins (3-7).

Let’s see what matchups will be key to the Patriots taking a commanding lead in the AFC East.
