Patriots’ Undrafted Defensive Tackles Can’t be Taken Lightly

The Patriots chose to add speed and athleticism during the draft. Afterwards, they ordered some beef.

The New England Patriots drafted seven players over the weekend. The list of Bill Belichick pick-ups included two wide receivers, two defensive backs, two edge-rushers and an inside linebacker. Each choice addressed a need, and it was a good haul by most standards.

But one position was notably missing from the draft pile: defensive tackle.

Even with USC and Canadian Football League standout Armond Armstead and ex-Oakland Raiders Pro Bowler Tommy Kelly in the fold, many still considered interior pass rush a top draft priority. Some were clamoring for a Kawann Short from Purdue, or a Jesse Williams from Alabama, or even a Bennie Logan from LSU.

The Patriots, obviously, weren’t listening.

The Patriots added some talent during the 2013 NFL Draft to a roster that was one of the four best in the NFL last year.

Come July, these players are going to be having a high-stakes competition for the last few spots on the 53-man roster.

Who made the cut?

The 2013 NFL Draft is in the books and the totality of the New England Patriots draft class is finally known. It’s now time to analyze the results, breakdown how the Patriots fared and project the players into spots on the roster.

Over the last 24 hours I’ve had a ton of thoughts running through my head and I try to fit some of those in this article. Did the Patriots fill their holes? What can we expect from these players in year one?

These are some of my final thoughts on the Patriots draft now that it’s all said and done.

2013 NFL Draft: Way Too Early Draft Grades

What grade did new Patriots receiver Aaron Dobson earn?

In a draft that the New England Patriots entered with only five draft picks, Bill Belichick traded away the team’s first round pick and picked up four picks along the way—so the team ended with seven draft picks spread across the board.

Little to no surprise, New England traded out of the first round, but have two picks in the second and third round, as well as one in the fourth and two in the seventh.

With that being said, let’s take a look at our way too early draft grades for the Patriots.

The 2013 NFL draft came to an end Saturday, but the careers of 254 draft picks have just begun. We won’t know who will end up a bust or who will end up in Canton, but we do know who the New England Patriots selected over the course of three days this April.

And with that, it’s time to reflect upon the draft day decisions of head coach Bill Belichick, director of player personnel Nick Caserio and the rest of the Patriots staff.

WIll T.J. Moe make this Patriots roster?

The 2013 NFL Draft has come to a close, but that doesn’t mean the work is finished. Each year the Patriots find at least one roster player that is signed after the draft. From Justin Francis to Randall Gay of BenJarvus Green-Ellis, the Patriots have had a lot of success finding UDFA gems.

Here is a breakdown of all the 2013 UDFA siginings made by the Patriots and my thoughts on each one. Remember, NFL off-season rosters expanded to 90 players and the Patriots aren’t anywhere near that limit. They are expected to be much more active in UDFA than last year.

Here is a breakdown of each UDFA signing and their chances of making the roster.
