The fullest day of the bowl season — New Year’s Day — is finally upon us, and the action all begins with the Heart of Dallas Bowl at noon, featuring the Purdue Boilermakers versus the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

While this game does not have the overall strength of draft prospects that many of the later games in the day, there are a few players participating in their final collegiate game who the New England Patriots should be keeping a close eye on Tuesday.

After a very entertaining Chick-Fil-A Bowl between LSU and Clemson, the Outback Bowl has a lot to live up to. Michigan and South Carolina both have some very intriguing 2013 NFL Draft prospects though, so this is certainly worth watching.

In a rematch of their season openers, 6-6 Iowa State will attempt to defeat 10-3 Tulsa for the second time the season. Although both teams are ranked among the top 40 defensively in terms of points per game allowed, the last contest was a 38-23 affair. Although the possibility of another high-scoring matchup exists, the top four prospects in the Liberty Bowl this year are all defensive players. Read on for more information regarding this game’s most notable players.

The situation facing the USC Trojans in Monday’s Sun Bowl isn’t what they had planned for this year’s college football season. Instead of playing in the BCS National Championship Game as many had predicted they would, the 7-5 Trojans will be playing one week earlier on New Year’s Eve, and it will be without senior quarterback Matt Barkley, who will miss out on playing in his final collegiate game due to a shoulder injury.

For draftniks, not being able to watch Barkley is a disappointment, as he is in the mix to be one of the top quarterbacks drafted in a wide-open 2013 NFL draft class that lacks an elite quarterback prospect. Even without Barkley, however, this game has some draft prospects well worth watching, including some at positions the New England Patriots will likely be targeting this April.

Geno Smith Scouting Report

Could the Jets or Bills pick up Geno Smith as their quarterback of the future? (USA Today Sports Images)

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

Up to this point many of the bowl games have been uninteresting or disappointing, that should change tomorrow night in the Pinstripe Bowl.

The game features one of the best QB match-ups of all the bowl games with Syracuse’s Ryan Nassib taking on potential top ten pick Geno Smith. This game will  be closely watched by many to see what QB outperforms the other.

Besides the two high profile quarterbacks, there are a pair of receivers and a few other prospects we will be watching closely.
