The New England Patriots enter the season well-stocked with talent; unfortunately, only 53 of their players are eligible to make the opening day roster. A number of the players on roster are eligible for the practice squad, however, in what is expected to be a cutthroat competition.

This article will examine the players most deserving of practice squad spots, along with other practice-squad eligible players who may be able to oust some of the competition for a space.

The fate of Tavon Wilson was instantly changed with the writing of his name on a draft card by New England Patriots staff at the 2012 NFL Draft. He was instantly tied to the likes of Stevan Ridley, Sebastian Vollmer, Logan Mankins and Richard Seymour – players who were instantly panned as “reaches” by many fans, experts and media members.

Will Wilson join the names above or will he enter into the realm of Terrence Wheatley, Darius Butler and other second round picks who couldn’t make it in Foxborough.

In April of 2011, Patriots fans were clamoring to draft pass rushers, their wish finally came true, a year later.

Bill Belichick & co. spent valuable resources retooling their pass rush using first round picks on DE Chandler Jones and LB/situational pass rusher Dont’a Hightower and a third round pick on Arkansas DE Jake Bequette.

So where does the productive former Razorback fit in the Patriots new front 7?

Patriots Training Camp Preview: Defensive Line

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

Despite being an undrafted free agent, Kyle Love has turned into a key player on the Patriots defensive line.

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

Throughout Bill Belichick’s tenure as Head Coach in New England the Patriots have boasted one of the best defensive lines in the league. However, over the past few seasons that defensive line has been in a state of transition both personnel wise and schematically.

This off-season the team made a concerted effort to add youthful talent to the line through the draft. It was also a priority to sign cost effective free agents who could be integrated into the Patriots defensive front for the foreseeable future. These personnel moves resulted in creating an abundance of talent both young and old at defensive tackle and end positions.

How is the defensive line depth chart shaping up for the regular season?

If you had to categorize the 2012 off-season so far, it might be called “the off-season of the WR.”

After a 2011 season of sub-par WR performances, the Patriots identified a need and addressed it with abundance. The team signed Anthony Gonzalez, Jabar Gaffney, Jesse Holley, Brandon Lloyd and Donte Stallworth in free agency and capped that off by taking Northwestern product Jeremy Ebert in the 7th round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

With so much competition, what can we expect out of Ebert in 2012?

After the New England Patriots drafted Tavon Wilson, most fans thought the “What!?!” pick had already been made by the Patriots in the 2012 NFL Draft. However, Bill Belichick had another surprise in store for the New England faithful with his sixth round selection of Ohio State DB and rugby player Nate Ebner.

Will Nate Ebner make the Patriots roster? If he does, what sort of impact can he make?

Alfonzo Dennard, former standout cornerback at the University of Nebraska, was picked by the New England Patriots in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Someone reading that sentence just four short months ago would have laughed – no way would Dennard fall into the third round, let alone the seventh.

Yet, here we are. What can we expect out of Dennard for the 2012 season?
