So far I like the moves the Patriots have made. I like that we got both J-Mac and Danny Shelton for nothing but swapping picks. I like getting back Burkhead and most the ST guys. We could add a bigger RB ( Jeremy Hill maybe ?) and a LB such as Casillas or Brown . In the draft we need an athletic LB , a DE , OT ,QB and a S to replace Chung or Mccourty. We got to remember we get back Hightower and Edelman as well as Harvey Langi back from injury. We also get to see Derek rivers ( really for the first time mostly ) and Keionta Davis as well . We will have a more experienced Deatrich Wise and Adam Butler.

  3. EdgeX says:

Mathieu looks like a long shot to get to Patriots.

Teams supposedly interested include: Packers, Giants, Jets, Saints, Seahawks, Texans & Raiders and possibly more.

    Good news for Suh haters!

    Per Matthew Cannata (Dolphins Insider):

While the @Patriots have interest in Suh, it looks like the @Seahawks are starting to emerge as the front runner. Seattle would obviously be a much better destination for Dolphins fans.

First off I want to thank all the writers and contributors to this site. Always a pleasure reading all the articles/discussions and I appreciate all the hard work unearthing prospects that you all do daily.

Been a rough couple of days watching so many fan favorites depart for greener $$ pastures, but we just couldn’t afford to pay Nate to be the top LT in the league or Malcolm 12 mil a year. Definitely have some holes to fill for next year but let’s not forget we have some guys coming back from injury and hopefully can get some contributions from our 3rd rounders from last year in Rivers and Garcia, who I really like. Though it may take them until mid season to get going. I also like the Shelton trade as I was surprised at how we ran what seemed to be a much smaller dline than typical years and got gouged on the ground seemingly because of it.

Now onto my mock which is more of what I would do vs what bill will do. Because let’s face it, none of us have any idea what he will do. With that being said the only picks that I have predicted in the draft by the pats were Malcolm Mitchell, David Andrews (udfa), trey flowers and deatrich wise Jr.

I think we get surprised on what positions we target in the draft. Example being that we supposedly were going to take Dan Feeny OG last year until the chargers grabbed him right before us. And the strong trade offer we made for Marcellus Bennet. (Really wish we could have pulled that one off)

Round 1- trade down for 2nd and 3rd
Round 2- Jessie Bates FS Wake Forest
Round 2- Lorenzo Carter OLB Georgia
Round 2- Nathan Shepherd DT Fort Hays (Before Denver’s early 3rd)
Round 3- Mike White QB Western Kentucky
Round 3- Brian O’Neil OT Pittsburgh (or another tackle- I’m terrible at scouting Oline)
Round 4- John Kelly RB Tennessee
Round 5- Ryan Izzo TE FSU
Round 6- Avonte Maddox CB Pittsburgh

Happy draft season fellas and let’s hope for some good news soon.

I just read up on Bates and the reports are really intriguing. It sounds like he would be a great ST player early on and could succeed Chung down the line (while giving him some rest already). That seems like a good pick to me.
Kelly is on my list as well, I think he could be a really nice late-round pick. He probably is what he is right now, but his presence wouldn’t tip off the opponent and he should be good short-yardage and goal-line RB.
Shepherd is an interesting prospect but I don’t see a roster spot for another interior DL. He would need to redshirt more or less behind Brown, Shelton, and Guy – but I can’t see them cutting Butler. Although another edge rusher could move Wise inside on a more permanent basis. Hmm.

  5. JH says:

Free Agency Wish-list: (Cut Dwayne Allen, Shae McClellin, and Mike Gillislee)

RB Orleans Darkwa: Athletic power back who can catch a little too; I think he’d be a nice addition to our current group. We would then have White as a pass catching back, Darkwa as a power back, and Burkhead doing a little of both. Shouldn’t cost too much and has only one fumble in his career (which was recovered by his team).

TE Tyler Eifert – I think he’ll be cheaper because of his injury history, but we’d be getting someone who could function as a matchup nightmare next to Gronk and someone who could play TE1 if Gronk went down because of his blocking ability.

DE Alex Okafor – He’ll be cheaper because of his injury but will hopefully be able to replicate what he did with the Saints. He’s one of the only capable edge players left that can play DE and OLB, which I think is the type of edge player the Patriots are trying to get. In my opinion he is the best edge player left in general. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Pats trade for an edge player, though, since the market for these DE/OLB’s is super thin.

LB Korey Toomer – Athletic linebacker that produces when given the opportunity. Above average in coverage and against the run. I think he could be a good starting ILB for us, and he shouldn’t be that expensive either.

CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie – Should also be cheap because of age, and is still a very capable corner. Can play outside and in the slot, and would nicely fill out our group of corners.

OT Cameron Fleming/OT LaAdrian Waddle – As far as left tackle goes, I think we’ll be fine with what we’ve got, assuming we resign one of Fleming or Waddle. Whoever the Patriots think is the better player can compete with Marcus Cannon for the Left tackle spot, and the other would play right tackle. They also have Cole Croston and Antonio Garcia and will hopefully draft another tackle this April.

    • Brian says:

Eifert and DRC would be welcome additions. Also hoping Marty Bennett makes his way back to us after getting little FA attention.

      • steve earle says:

I’d really welcome Marty Bennett back, he knows the system, Brady knows him, couldn’t ask for better TE tandem. Erfert is about the next best FA TE and has youth for longer term if Gronk retires next year. I prefer these guys over the draft class TE’s which I see as suspect.

    • kevin z says:

I like Darkwa def a need with a bigger back like can catch a lil bit too.
I like Toomer too be a nice move if happens he 29 hasn’t played a lot to be a old 29 though.

  6. kevin z says:

With Rivers returning he good at setting edge attacking the QB better close to line. Langi has range good vs run has potential to cover . Be nice to add them back both athletic. With that DE get pushed down a little bit doubt BB admits made mistake with Rivers.

Round 1 Darius Leanord Hybrid Fast rangy PLays with a Edge from being over looked. Reminds me of a less hyped Rashaan Evans. Moving up from senior Bowl combine.
Round 2 Kyzir White SS physical great tackler picked about where chung was.
Round 2 Kyle Lauletta QB Richmond Picked around where Jimmy G was.
Round 3 Fatusaki DE played him like a NT but plays like a DE well build a beast
Round 4 Alex Cappa OL Nasty plays all out covers up his NON athletic ability
Round 5 James Butler RB athletic played with Adam Butler and OT Jelks so know caught bb eye
Round 6 Flowers H-back nice chess piece weapon.

IF don’t get leonard wouldn’t mind Warner or Burks or Griffin.
If don’t get White be ok with fs Reid or DJ Reed as a slot nickel or FS

  7. JoeyNL says:

Reports are that The Patriots are hosting former Patriots Asante Cleveland and Jonathan Casillas for visits today.

  8. Tristan says:

    7 round mock Patriots
Round 1 Lorenzo Carter OLB Georgia
Round 2 Dallas Goedert TE SD State
Round 2 Tyrell Crosby OT Oregon
Round 3 Kyle Lauletta QB Richmond
Round 4 (comp) Isaac Yiadom CB Boston College
Round 5 Trey Quinn WR SMU
Round 6 Will Geary DT Kansas State

    Theory behind each pick:
Lorenzo Carter hybrid DE/OLB athletic, fast, productive, great tackler. Linked to patriots at combine. Big school production. Can play on the line and off the ball. Front seven is the weakest part of the patriots roster. Patriots tried to sign a very similar player in Trent Murphy showing that the team views this as a signifcant need.

Dallas Goedert probably the best pass catching tight end in the draft. Monster production. okay blocker. linked to patriots at combine. Patriots may not keep D Allen given cap hit and Gronk may only play one more season. Has great size for position and great after the catch ability. Great Hands and big hand size.

Tyrell Crosby very efficient blocker. I think he didn’t allow a sack all year at LT. Has ability to play left tackle in NFL. Decent athlete. Lost Solder in free agency. Huge loss for the team tried to keep him showing that there was a major need at the position to keep him. Pats should use a pick at tackle in my opinion in the draft better early than late.

Kyle Lauletta – I think patriots will draft either Lauletta, Falk or Litton with a pick in the first 3 rounds. No need to explain Brady is 41 and Hoyer is a short term backup. I like all three would be happy with any of the three. Just worked out in the mock I did Litton and Falk were gone by this pick so I picked Lauletta.

Isaac Yiadom – I think patriots should use a pick on the secondary. Either safety or corner both positions did not play well overall last season. Lost Malcolm Butler in free agency. This is a local Boston College player talented, decent size and ability. Still a little raw and not the best footwork but has upside. Seems like a smart player and player that would fit with the patriots

Trey Quinn – Patriots have been linked to Trey Quinn at the combine. Has ability to play slot and outside. Lost Amendola in free agency. Quinn may be an option to be the long term slot guy. Has good hands and high production this past season. Good size for slot guy. Overall think this would be a great pick. Looked good at combine

Will Geary – Ranked number 2 player against the run in college football by PFF. Hugely productive player. A bit undersized but hard working well coached player. As mentioned front seven on patriots is biggest weakness on the team by a lot so I expect we spend a few picks in this area.

    • Russell says:

Well thought out Mock. I like Carter as well, & it will take an early pick to get him. I like TE Ian Thomas, who could be a better value in the 3d round.

    • kevin z says:

I like Carter as well only thing scares me is gets blocked my RB’s on tape yea rb’s it shouldn’t happen at his size

    • Mike Gerken says:

Well thought our mock. Would be hard pressed to be upset if this is how it went down like this in real life.

  9. Russell says:

    Guys to watch for the Patriots;

DE/LB – Anthony Chickillo , who has a 6th round tender on him (Pittsburg)
    WR/SP teams – Jeff Janis
    S/CB – Keith McGill

    • Russell says:

      Chickillo, is 25, 6’3″ 260 lbs., 33 1/2″ arms, 10 1/8″ Hands , 3-cone 7.17, bench 27,, 34 1/2 V, 9’6″ B-jump, 4.79 40 yd. 1.66 10 yd. Career 54 tackles, 5.5 sacks.
Chickillo looks like a great value, for a 6th round pick, & MORE than $1.9 mil. which the steeler’s must pay him, as tendered.

      • Russell says:

important to remember restricted free agents, do not count against compensatory formular.
        At present; the Patriots COULD get, #2 – 3d round, & #2 – 6th round Comp. picks.

  10. kevin z says:

Glad Pats sticking to there usual formula last year was a odd year where signed Gilmore. Sign lower part of roster gain or add comp Picks. Does stink to lose people but between FA Draft Plus returning injured players from last year I think will be fine.

  11. kevan says:

Joe Thuney could play LT. Not a long term answer but I think he could be a better LT than Cannon.

  12. macspak says:

Why do I feel that most of the departing are going to regret their moves and that by the half way mark NY fans and media are going to hate and crucify Solder?

    • Brian says:

I agree. Solder put a massive target on his back being the highest payed OT in the league now. Going to be a lot of eyes on him this year.

  13. GM-in-Training says:

So, Pats have extended King, Ebner, Burkhead, and rumor is Slater is looking good too.

    Notice a pattern?

The Pats are locking in premier special teamers, which isn’t quite 1/3rd of the game, but it’s a significant part of it, and one where the Pats find affordable elite players, and are always in consideration for best special teams in the NFL.

Sure, it’s not as exciting to watch on day 1 or day 2 of FA, but still it shows progress on their plan.

I’m wondering how many FA they will bring in, and how much it might offset their hypothetical 4 compensatories right now?

  14. Russell says:

Patriots got out-bid for Trent Murphy; buy Buffalo $21 mil. for 3 yrs. , Patriots offered $16.5 for 3 yr.

  15. kevan says:

I wouldn’t mind signing the honey badger, even if it means losing Chung. Adrian clayborn and Preston brown would be worth looking at too. That would be 3 solid additions to the front 7.

  16. Mike Gerken says:

Rex Burkhead has resigned on a multi-year deal. No details yet.
