The Patriots have one of the top linebacker trios in the NFL, but the depth behind isn’t nearly as strong. Bill Belichick made a move to address that by adding Mississippi State linebacker Matthew Wells.
Wells is a coverage/special teams linebacker that trades size (6’1″, 220 pounds) for speed. He ran a sub 4.5 forty-yard dash at his pro day. With his speed he could be used a “money” safety in sub situations. Wells excels when he is used in space.
Wells will likely compete with the likes of James Morris, Nate Ebner and Chris White for one of the final spots on the 53-man roster this fall.

I really like this because he looks like a hybrid player and fits the system.
So actually the guy is blind in one eye, how the hell is he going to cover? I guess he’s going to be nothing more than a ST player
That’s why the Cowboys didn’t draft him.
They prefer to draft coverage guys who are blind in both eyes.
Legally blind, he can still see a bit out of that right eye. Doesn’t hamper his play.
blind eye with solid production indicates good instincts 🙂
Others, like myself, may be wondering why Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is still on board? Mike Mayock fron NFL.com just said that his knee injury didn’t consist simply of an ACL tear and was much worse than CB Aaron Colvin’c from last year … and there are some doubts if he’d ever play again.
Too bad for the kid. Hope he comes back.
Actually, like this pick. Nickle LB, who plays ST and maybe some SS snaps down the line.
Yeah, no complaints about this pick.
So in other words, this linebacker is faster than our secound round safety? ahhaha
I like the pick, we needed a coverage LB
I just want Ifo Ekpre-Olomu now. We need a cornerback!!!!!
I think Belicheck would’ve picked Ifo by now if he liked him because the value is good. At this point I hope we trade for another cornerback, maybe Boykin of the Eagles as they reportedly tried to use him to trade up.
