Report: Patriots Trade Jeff Demps for LeGarrette Blount

Jeff Demps never saw the field for the Patriots in a regular season game.

According to a report from Jeff Howe, the Patriots are set to trade running back and return specialist Jeff Demps.

Update: The Patriots have traded Demps and a 7th Round pick for Bucs RB LaGarrette Blount.

Demps has expressed interest in running track and playing football – something incompatible with how the Patriots run their team. Demps said this in a recent interview:

When asked what he would say to Patriots coach Bill Belichick if he asked Demps how he can handle the obligations of two sports, he replied, “Listen coach, I want to do both, but in order for me to get to where I want to be on the track and field side, it’ll take a full year of preparation. And after the (track) season, if you guys are willing to let me come back, you know, probably midseason, and work out and train and get ready for the season, I’ll be able to do that. If not, then I guess I’ll just focus on running.”

With Leon Washington and Danny Amendola on the roster to give Julian Edelman help in the return game, and Shane Vereen showing that he is a legitimate threat to catch the ball out of the backfield, the Patriots can afford to send Demps out of town.

Blount is a violent runner that brings a lot of power to the table. Where he fits in with Stevan Ridley and Brandon Bolden remains to be seen. I doubt that both Bolden and Blount make the roster. Blount has had some trouble fumbling the ball and has had multiple issues away from the field.

  1. RB says:

    Blount will rock in NE!

  2. J H TARBORO says:

Don’t sleep on Brandon Boulden, he has good pood power and speed and Ridley should be a little nervous if Boulden gets it together.

    • Dennis says:

The Pats rotate the RBs a lot, vereen, ridley, bolden, and blount could all split carries/series on any given game, if healthy

  3. J H TARBORO says:

goodbye to Jeff bo knows Demps and Blount comes to a winning organization, for Blount that give him a new start and attitude.

  4. cc says:

AWSOME. Now just send 1. Bolden, 2. J. Cunningham & 3. Mallet together in a in away in a package deal and Roll W/it!

    • Liam says:

You might get a cheese sandwhich in return for that. I really don’t understand why people think we’ll get a second rounder for Mallett. Palmer and Flynn are more proven QB’s and they only returned late rounders. As for Bolden/Cunningham, they could be cut any and represent little upside over a street free agent. Zero trade value.

  5. cc says:

Absolutely love it. Peace Out Demps.

  6. acm says:

Blount runs like a train with an attitude. The type of RB the pats could definitely use, imo. He is also pretty shifty and cuts well for a guy his size.

maybe they could have saved themselves that 7th but don’t think it’s too high a price to pay anyway.

Wouldn’t mind Chris Rainey in training camp either.

    • Dennis says:

Much agreed. Adds depth and competition in training camp, power runner that could be part of the RB rotation and a big help in short yardage situations… Maybe even try him out at fullback a little too?

  7. steve earle says:

Blount is a load, power runner and as long as Demps is planning on being a track star he and a 7th is fine, good deal as long as he is healthy.

  8. JMC says:

Good Trade- Leon Washington has what would have been Demps role role, Blount is a power back who wants snaps- means he needs to earn the 3rd and short role and not fumble. Verene can play X- WR or flanker on 3rd down /option run or pass.

  9. Stephen S says:

I read that we also pick up L Blounts contract if thats true I dont like this trade at all considering that the Bucs were considering just cutting/releasing him anyways

    • Jeff M says:

The guy went undrafted so it’s not like he had any guarantees in his deal anyways. This was a good trade.

  10. dave w says:

good experienced backup for Ridley—has been productive

  11. Nuf Ced says:

trolls… a seventh is a flyer to begin with; so they took a flyer on a guy who has ran for a 1000+ in an NFL season. Thats more know productivity than some kid from Northsouthern Directional State

  12. Alan Beecher says:

ESPN’s Mike Reiss is reporting it as a fact that the Pats sent Demps and a 7th round pick for LeGarrette Blount.

    A nice addition.

  13. Matt says:

What are these reports the pats are in active discussions with a variety of teams for a trade with Jeff demps?? If that’s true, they need someone else to negotiate trade deals bc this is pathetic

    • Alan Beecher says:

I don’t see how a RB that only wants to play half a season is going to be worth a lot in a trade no matter how many teams supposedly want him.

  14. Matt says:

Dumb trade. Shoulda just cut demps and kept your 7th Round pick and taken some more fliers on WR’s and see if you find a diamond in the rough

  15. Eric says:

Stupid trade. Both sides lose. Blount is not talented. He won’t make the roster. Dumb.
