2013 NFL Draft: Patriots Select Josh Boyce

Josh Boyce NFL Draft

Josh Boyce is your latest addition for the Patriots at receiver.

NEPD Editor: James Christensen

With the 102nd pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Patriots have added Josh Boyce (WR, TCU).

Adding a second rookie wide receiver to go along with Aaron Dobson is exactly what the Patriots need to do. After double-dipping on tight ends and running backs over the last few drafts, they finally add some depth at receiver.

Boyce, who had an official visit with the Patriots earlier in the draft process, measures in at 6’0″ and 205 pounds. I really like Boyce in jump ball situations and he is not an easy guy to tackle once he has the ball in his hands.

He has enough physicality to get off the line against press coverage and runs good routes. Boyce ran a 4.38 at the combine, but he doesn’t seem that fast to me on the football field. His quickness that he showed with his 6.68 three-cone time certainly translates on the field though – he looks very shifty and has elite change of direction skills. Boyce is no Randy Moss, but he can lull cornerbacks to sleep and blow by them with his acceleration – that should translate very well in play-action.

Boyce has the skills to play in the slot, but I wouldn’t count him out as a potential “Z” receiver to go with Dobson’s “X”. Boyce is a good blocker and his versatility will help get him on the field.

Even with a tumultuous season at quarterback, Boyce was very productive at TCU. He caught 66 balls for 891 yards and 7 touchdowns. In 2011 he scored 9 touchdowns on 61 catches for 998 yards. He ended up leaving early from TCU due to the uncertainty with Casey Pachall at quarterback and he had already graduated – his 23 on the Wonderlic test also speaks to his intelligence.

Boyce is recovering from a fracture in his baby-toe, but should be fine to participate in all off-season activities.

The Patriots do not have any more picks until the 7th round.

You guys will be extremely happy with Boyce. I got to play with him at Tcu and let me tell you that he was coach pattersons favorite player. He was one of the strongest players in the weight room and always was competing. A definite steal in round 4

  2. MaineMan says:

Most interesting drill number for Boyce was his 22 bench reps (avg for a WR is something less than 15) – speaks to his ability as a blocker and to get off the LoS against press coverage.

That’s 10 Wide Outs now on the roster for T. Brady 2 “@%¿= “with before 9-18-13.

Josh Boyce is not a wide out he is a slot receiver I know cause I ask tcu’s biggest fan

Ive read reports that said Joyce would have been a 1st rounder if he was just 2-3″ taller.

He’s got speed, agility, crisp routes, great hands, he’s aggressive,he goes across the middle, he is INTELLIGENT, and he has huge play-making ability.

The Patriots offense is already so dynamic and potent that Joyce and Dobson are probably going to get great match-ups and Tom Brady will exploit the crap out of it. And, if the Patriots can get more 6 man fronts then they’ll rush it with Ridley all day.

Was really hoping we would draft Patton rounds 2-4 in this draft, hope Boyce & Dobson turn out to be better players.
