First and foremost, the NFL Scouting Combine is about getting accurate medical information. You especially realize that today when word breaks of a young man that will be battling a health condition.
Read on for a very personal note about what Star Lotulelei could be facing.
Earlier this afternoon, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen broke news that Star Lotulelei has a potentially serious medical concern.
Lotulelei’s left ventricle is pumping at 44 percent efficiency – normal range is 55-70 percent. He will undergo more tests in Salt Lake City

Lotulelei’s agent went on to confirm the report, stating that the Utah defensive tackle will not work out at the combine, but is planning on doing all the drills at his pro day in March.
Five years ago, I was diagnosed with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, a condition that ended up cutting my heart’s efficiency to 45%. After two years of trying to treat the condition with medicine, I elected to have a cardiac ablation.
After ten days of recovery, I was able to resume normal activities. After 2-3 months, I felt better than I had prior to the diagnosis – more energy and endurance.
I am not pretending to have information that Lotulelei and I have the same condition., but I will say that there are medicines and procedures in place to aid in getting the heart pumping with better efficiency.
If one of those procedures fits what Lotulelei needs, it is very possible that he could not only come back at 100%, but perhaps even better. Of courses, the opposite could be true and this could be a career and or life-threatening situation. Hopefully, Lotulelei will receive good news when meeting with a specialist.
NFL teams probably won’t have a perfect picture of what the future holds for Lotulelei – who does for any prospect – so I do expect Lotulelei to drop come draft day. Once predicted to be a top five, or perhaps even the 1st pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, he could be looking at a spot outside of the top half of the first round.
The Patriots once caught a prospect falling due to health reasons (knees) and that worked out pretty well. Perhaps the two will suit up next to each other – Vince Wilfork and Lotulelei would be awfully formidable.
Lotulelei is currently my #3 defensive tackle in the 2013 NFL Draft.
