Prospect: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
Grade: 7.1 (Grading Scale)
Quinton Patton has average height and a slender build. Shows very good agility while running at full speed and fluid change of direction while running routes. Patton accelerates quickly out of his stance and is able to reach top speed within 5-7 yards. Vertical speed is good not great, would expect him to run in the high 4.4-low 4.5 range. Flexibility, bendability is outstanding, able to control his body while making plays. Has a good vertical leap and makes a number of highlight catches while in the air/on the sideline.
Lacks elite suddenness out of his breaks and slender frame needs muscle mass added. His overall strength has been questioned.
Patton is a smart, savvy and instinctive route runner. He comes out of his stance with explosion and eats up any cushion the CB has given him. Stems his routes and sets up the cornerback with head-fakes and shimmies. Runs his routes to the proper depth and does a good job at moving laterally across the field. Tempo’s his routes well, has the ability to gear down depending on the coverage. Can play outside or in the slot, and is effective on quick WR screens. Sells his double moves nicely, doesn’t rush his routes. Doesn’t get great separation at the top of his routes, but is able to adjust his body and extend to make the tough catch. Against zone coverage he will adjust his route and sit it down to find opening. Has enough speed to get on top of the defense, but doesn’t separate real well with vertical speed. Shows exceptional sideline and positional awareness, gets his feet down in bounds and knows where defender is coming from.
Takes too many steps at the top of his routes, can cut down on the wasted motion. Needs to do better job of getting off initial press at the line.
Has reliable and natural hands. Possession type receiver due to his reliable hands and ability to hang onto the football. Will impact the passing game at every level. Makes a concerted effort to catch everything away from this body, doesn’t drop many throws. Can make the tough catch and contorts his body in coverage to shield the ball from the defender. Tracks the deep ball very well, makes over the shoulder catches and makes catches while sliding to the ground. Will work his way back to the ball on comeback/hook routes. Good extension away from the body when in tight quarters to catch the ball. Competes for 50-50 balls and come down with jump balls.
Against more physical corners, he can be outmatched when the ball is en route. Will jump or adjust to the ball when he doesn’t need to. Makes an easy play tougher at times.
Despite limited strength Patton is an aggressive blocker. He shows a willingness and “want to” block attitude. Will attack defender when blocking on the edge and do his best to maintain the block. Good open-field blocker, will get out in front to usher ball carrier. Gets his hands on the receiver and can maintain.
Doesn’t break many tackles, can be brought down by arm contact and appeared to avoid being hit at times.
Plays with a confidence and swagger. Was one of the most vocal players at the Senior Bowl and seemed to have the “class clown” type attitude. Extremely popular among teammates. Has played in every game at LA Tech since transferring from Coffeyville Junior College. Has some experience returning both kicks and punts, but didn’t do a lot of it (less than 10 each). Offers some versatility as he can play out wide or in the slot (similar to Reggie Wayne), also a factor on reverses and screen passes. Well-respected in the community, gave his Bowl Game tickets away to the Make-A-Wish Foundations.
Patton has a very well developed skill set, that will make him a productive NFL receiver. He has sure hands and runs smart routes. Although he’s not a burner he is able to impact the passing game at each level of the field with by setting up his routes, being patient and good ball skills. Patton has the makings of a possession receiver who can be relied upon to make the big play with the game on the line.
In a year where the receiver position is very deep Patton stands out for his all-around ability. He is likely to come off the board quickly in the second round of this April’s NFL Draft.
