Each day leading up to the start of Patriots training camp, we’ll take a look at one position on the roster as it currently stands. We start off with the most stable position on the roster: quarterback.
Tom Brady is a lock, but who make the rosters and what impact will those players have this year and in the future?
Current Roster (3): Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett
What to watch for: Who wins the back-up job behind Tom Brady and how much has Ryan Mallett improved now that he has had an entire off-season in the Patriots system.
Who makes the final 53: Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett all should have no problem making the final roster
Bubble Watch: None
Tom Brady will be the starter barring (god forbid) an injury and Brian Hoyer will likely be the back up. With the Patriots roster as deep as every roster spots will be very tough to come by.
Coach Belichick might find it tough to keep three quarterbacks this year especially if it means he has to cut a young cornerback or linebacker. If Ryan Mallett shows enough improvement in camp and the coaching staff feels confident he can handle back-up duties, I wouldn’t rule out a trade of Hoyer.
Brian Hoyer isn’t in the long term plans for the Patriots and he will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2012 season. If another team loses it’s QB in camp, don’t be surprised to see them make a move for Hoyer. The Patriots have shown that they have no problem carrying only two QB’s on the active 53 man roster and if they can get good value for Hoyer, Belichick might make the move.
Otherwise, the depth chart will be Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett chomping on the heels of Hoyer.
