Scouting the 2013 NFL Draft: Purdue vs Western Michigan (2011)

#93 DT Kawann Short

-Cut down by left tackle, taken to the ground.
-Tries bull rush, minimal push.
-Pad level good initially, getting under OL at times.
-Sitting out some plays on the sideline.
-Shows some sudden athleticism, sheds blocker and lays a hit on the RB.
-Quick off the ball as he shoots gap.
-Holds the line against double team, assists on tackle for loss.
-Triple-teamed by all three interior linemen.
-Getting a bit upright when trying to the power rush late in the half.
-Strong inside move over the RT flushes Carder out of the pocket.
-Good surge, knocks down one blocker and fends the other one off to make tackle.
-Extends his arms well through contact and pushes RT into the pocket.
-Called for roughing the passer, not a very smart play.
-Conversion (power to speed) move catches RT off balance and gets some pressure on the QB.

Overview: Short drew a lot of attention from the offense, routinely seeing multiple blockers. Short showed some quickness and power from both the DE and DT positions and should be a potential first round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.

#90 DT Bruce Gaston
-Lining up at DT (O, 1, 3 tech).
-Drawing some double teams initially.
-Not seeing the field a ton.
-Decent bull rush against double team, got some movement.
-Impressive play on the goal line, surges through blockers and devours QB behind the line.
-Knocked the QB’s helmet off.
-Dives on the fumble and recovers it for the clinching turnover.

Overview: Made a few flash plays and was stout against the double team. His big frame will get him noticed this year.

Overview: Beckford will be back in 2012 – hopefully he is ready to make some better decisions.
