Joseph Addai Latest Addition to New-Look Patriots

Joseph Addai appears to be the last piece of the puzzle

NEPD Editor: Mike Loyko

When the Patriots passed on the opportunity to draft a running back last week in the NFL Draft, it appeared that the Patriots would address the lack of running back depth through the free agent market.

On Saturday, word was leaked out by Peyton Manning of all people, that his former Colts teammate RB Joseph Addai was going to sign with the Patriots.

A week before the NFL Draft the Patriots worked out a trio of free agent running backs. That trio included former Redskins RB Tim Hightower, former Colts RB Joseph Addai and Packers free agent RB Ryan Grant.

It appeared likely that the Patriots were going to add one more RB to the depth chart that already included second year running backsĀ Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and 3rd down/scatback Danny Woodhead. When the draft ended last Saturday and the Patriots didn’t draft a running back we got our answer to how they were going to add another running back, everything except the name.

Well, on Saturday Peyton Manning leaked out that his former teammate Joseph Addai was signing with New England, giving Patriot fans their answer.

Joseph Addai is entering his 7th season in the NFL and it will be his first season with a team besides the Indianapolis Colts. The Patriots passed on Addai in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft to pick running back Laurence Maroney with the 21st pick.

Addai has only played 20 games combined over the previous two seasons as he has battled various injuries. The 2011 season was the worst statistical season for Addai as he amassed only 433 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. He also added 15 receptions for 93 yards. The 2011 season as a whole was a disaster for the Colts, so it’s tough to take much stock in the 2011 numbers.

Although it’s clear he’s not the same running back he once was, Bill Belichick obviously liked what he saw in his workout two weeks ago.

Addai appears to be one of the final pieces to the 2012 New England Patriots offense in my opinion. During this off-season, the Patriots have rebuilt their receiving corps with Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney, Donte Stallworth and Anthony Gonzalez. They have added a number three tight end in Daniel Fells and added some depth along the offensive line with Robert Gallery. The running back position was the one roster spot that had yet to be addressed, and with the signing of Addai the offensive attack looks complete.

When healthy and at his best Addai is a very good all-around back. At 5’11″ 215 pound he is a bigger running back, who is a very balanced runner. Addai can run between the tackles, but is also elusive enough to make people miss in space.

Throughout his career Addai has been a productive receiver out of the backfield, catching 191 passes in his career. Coming from the Colts spread passing attack, Addai has experience in pass protection and is considered one of the better pass blocking running backs in the league.

Coming to the Patriots at this point in his career Joseph Addai isn’t going to be asked to carry the load. His role will be to challenge, push and to mentor second year runners Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley.

The Patriots have lost both BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Kevin Faulk this off-season. In losing them, the Patriots lost their two best pass protecting running backs. Addai’s value to the Patriots will be tied to his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and protect Tom Brady in passing situations. It’s tough to ask two young running backs to pass block if they don’t have game experience doing it. Addai will simply give the Patriots more options and depth at the position.

It will be interesting to watch just how much Joseph Addai has left in the tank. With his signing it appears that the 2012 New England Patriots are set. Well, at least their offense is, and it’s going to be fun to watch!

Hope the O line can run block..they have been pass blocking for the last five years..i.e. post Benson…er, ah, i mean Dillon.

  2. Larry says:

There are going to be 1000 players in the Pats training camp………..It will be interesting to see who makes the final cut………….The coach has sent a message if you have no idea what is going on your toast………… The Ochostinkos and Brace types are on their last legs…………….You better be ready to runble right out of the gate especiallyif your a veteran………………..

  3. psw says:

Alright alright alright, I meant Cedric Benson, I brain farted. Haven’t you guys ever blurted out the wrong name before. (especially dangerous during sex by the way)
But to the point I’m still not overly impressed with Addai, he just doesn’t say “Yessss!!!!” moment to me, its more of a ewwwwww.
Benson wouldn’t be a Yeessss!!! either, more of an hey ok.

  4. Rick says:

    Addai = Crumpler…

Vereen + Ridley = Gronk and Hernandez!

  5. TD says:

Isn’t it premature to say we lost Faulk? No official or unofficial notice for that matter.

Ridley was promising last year, which is why BB let BJGE walk for the money he got out of the Bengals. Vereen is a big unknown, which is probably why Addai was brought in.

  6. psw says:

Don’t see any reason to like this. This guy has been injury plagued and under productive his entire career. So he can pass block, a dead cow can lay in your way. This doesn’t impress me, I’d rather have law firm back. Or wait 2 months and see if Corrie Dillon panics and knocks a mil or two off his price.

    • Nuf Ced says:

      Huh???

“Corrie Dillon”?? I have no idea who you are talking about.

Do you mean the currently unemployed former Bengal RB Cedric Benson or do you really mean the 38 year old former Bengal RB Corey Dillon who retired 5 years ago.

When healthy Addai was the more complete and explosive back; and he only has 7 fumbles in over 2500 touches.

You underestimate pass blocking, asking Steve Young about how good Lawrence Phillips was at pass blocking…

    • AP says:

      C-L-U-E-L-E-S-S

    • Jim R says:

PSW, I’m sure they could get Corrie Dillon, Antione Smith, RJ Redmond at a great price now.
Addai, is not going to gain 1200 yards or score 15 touchdowns. He will be a great complementry piece in this offense. They have a lot of tools on Offense. This is a good move.

  7. Jim R says:

A proven veteran who can pass block and catch the ball out of the backfield. Where is the downside here? Another solid move

  8. Liam says:

Well, it’s official. The Patriots are now the two best teams in the AFC East.

  9. Lundahl says:

    We added Brandon Bolden

  10. DWE2012 says:

As long as he can produce small steady yardage & DOES NOT specifically fumble, besides clearly being what he need’s to be…………which is a veteran presence and tutor of sorts for the combo of both Vereen(a thus far wasted second round pick), & Ridley( a questionable/debatable third round pick thus far), so we can maybe solidify them VS questioning the picks in the 1st place and debate if they would and or could be S.T.er’s…….are they running back’s, are they special teamer’s, who’s #1 and who’s #2?
A solid year with Veteran presence will tell those tails.

J.A. is a temp, let’s get the other 2 “IN LINE” please.

    • Ken W says:

Saying Vereen is a wasted 2nd round pick is a little unfair. Shorted offseason from the lock out plus an injury, basically turned last year into a red shirt season for Vereen. This year will be the year to see if he is a player or not.

I liked what I saw from him in the little amount he played in preseason and the few carries he got during the year. A few times he had a player in the backfield and looked like a loss but he made him miss and got positive yards out of it.

      • DWE2012 says:

A “THUS FAR” wasted 2nd round pick as I stated. Shane Vereen has yet 2b heard from( a few PRE-season snaps and thats it…..?), Ridley at least showed a little promise here and there…..Vereen has YET TO BE HEARD FROM, he is thus far a wasted second rounder regardu=ing his status and injury as well…..
I am in hopes that Both Ridley and Vereen Break out this year and that even given the fact that we’ll have ADDAI and WOODY additionally as well + a cpl of FB’s as well…………(there is plenty of guy’s who can get the ball handed 2them). That BOth Ridley & Vereen Get Er’ Done.
Nevertheless in order for Vereen 2B considered anything but a wasted 2nd rounder…..He’ll have to come on strong finish well, and maybe even take shot’s @ punt and kickoff returns in addition to getting the ball handed or thrown out of the backfeild.
Right now, & until he breaks out and has a great year……this year…….Shane Vereen is “THUS FAR” a wasted pick.

  11. Ty says:

Also Signed UDFA RB Brandon Bolden! Deep backfield all the sudden!
