Film Room Notes: vs Southern Miss

Strengths: Johnson is a well rounded, natural MLB prospect – Good athlete for the position – Fast enough to play sideline to sideline –  Also can play a physical brand where he attacks the line of scrimmage and makes plays in the tackle box – Does a good job staying square to the line of scrimmage, exhibits plus lateral movement – Patient, plays under control and doesn’t over run many plays – Disciplined with his run fits - Good blitzer, shows good anticipation for snap count and can shoot the gap – Johnson handles himself well in coverage, I didn’t see many breakdowns on film – Can turn and run with receivers, good range – When he does get beat in coverage, he can make up for it with his speed – Good technique as a tackler, wraps up and delivers a blow at point of contact – Good first step, once he reads the play he explodes and gets going within the first few steps – Fights his way through the “garbage” and takes good angles to the ball – Johnson is a traditional 4-3 MLB, I view him as a player who can play on three downs and won’t have to come off the field in passing situations

Weaknesses: Instincts are just average, I would like to see him anticipate the play a little bit more and make his reads just a little bit faster – Needs to do a better job of using his hands – Does a good job of staying “clean” but once engaged with OL he struggles to get off blocks – Can get over-aggressive in pass coverage and use his hands to hold up the receiver, won’t be able to do it in the NFL – Needs to trust his reads a little more, I see him playing  just a little bit hesitant – Like most LB prospects ability to learn new and more complex coverages will be a major question mark.
