2012 NFL Combine: What We Learned – TE

2012 NFL Scouting Combine

How did the tight ends perform at the NFL Combine?

NEPD Editor: James Christensen

The tight ends have left their mark on Indianapolis and the 2012 NFL Combine. Is there another tight end in this class that will have a huge impact in the NFL next year?

Our 2012 TE Rankings

-People just getting used to players like Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez taking over on offenses better get used to it. Orson Charles and Dwayne Allen are just two of the “new-breed” tight-ends coming to the NFL.

-I was disappointed that Coby Fleener didn’t work out. The Stanford Pro Day is going to be a big draw for NFL scouts.

-Michael Egnew has a little explosiveness to him. His 10’11” broad jump was eye-popping. He didn’t look great in positional drills, however.

-Drake Dunsmore’s performance is making me go back and watch some more Northwestern tape. We saw him live a couple of times and he never really stood out, but it is worth another look.

-James Hanna is another prospect that we’ll be taking another look at when we review our Oklahoma games. Hanna’s 4.49 was the fastest time for tight ends.

-Deangelo Peterson and Ladarius Green are two “tight-ends” that will need to improve their blocking if they are going to impact the game like an Orson Charles. Defenses just don’t have to respect them as run blockers.

-Emil Igwenagu and Evan Rodriguez are two northeast kids (UMass and Temple, respectively) that are very intriguing for teams looking at viable receiver threats out of the backfield. Each can play FB/HB/TE.

  1. Jon says:

I think the Pats ought to pick up another TE either in free agency or the draft. Even just for depth never mind any game breaking abilities. Still, I don’t think it should be something addressed in the early rounds.

  2. AP says:

I think the Patriots should take a top TE – I know, sounds dumb, but if a lot of NFL teams are moving to the 2 TE dominance like NE – we should put 3 of them on the field. Right now there are mismatches having Gronk and Hernandez out their… might as well just put out a 3rd!

  3. Ryan says:

I didn’t think Hannah looked that good at the combine. He was a physical specie man but he struggled in any drill that he needed to catch the rock.
