Senior Bowl Report: Possible Patriots Targets

Donnie Fletcher, CB, Boston College- Fletcher is a “tall and long” CB. There have been multiple confirmed instances of the Patriots scouting Fletcher, so we know the interest is there. Fletcher has played mostly in a zone at Boston College, but can find the ball and make plays on it.

Casey Hayward, CB, Vanderbilt- Hayward is a ball hawking CB, who makes incredible plays on the ball. Plays smooth and fluid. Can defend bigger WR’s. Hayward is a smart football player and with the Patriots looking for CB help Hayward will get a long look.

Jaye Howard, DT, Florida- Howard is an athletic DL prospect who has a lot of potential. He has been overshadowed by the big name players across the Florida front 7, but Howard can play. He has a natual ability to shed blocks and play powerful. Howard could play a couple different positions along the defensive line and that versatility should be attractive to the Patriots.

George Iloka, S, Boise State- I am sure the Patriots will upgrade at least one of the safety positions this offseason and need to add depth to the position on top of it. Iloka is a big fast safety who can play both the strong and free position. Started his career as a CB and moved to safety, also a team captain as a senior.

Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina- A pass rushing prospect from South Carolina, Ingram disappears at times but has a knack for making big plays. Some thing he could be an OLB convert but I think he is a natural DE, and his lack of height there could hurt him. Ingram needs a lot of refinement especially in his pass rushing technique.

Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama- Out of all the players at the Senior Bowl this week I think Jenkins is the one the Patriots will be watching the closest. Jenkins is a tremendous athlete and plays with a toughness and fiestiness. Makes tremendous breaks on the ball and has some of the best CB instincts in the draft. Jenkins has a very good feel for the game and very solid ball skills. Off the field questions remain, but this kid is an Asante Samuel clone.

Mike Martin, DT, Michigan- Martin the former state champion wrestler is a throwback player. He is as hardworking a player as any in the draft. He has an endless motor and know how to use his hands. Bill Belichick likes to try and convert wrestlers to football players and Martin is already fully entrenched. Martin won’t ever be a pro-bowl calibur player but, he should be a very solid regular contributor.

Dwight Jones, Marvin McNutt, DeVier Posey, WR- All three of these guys are in the second or third tier of the WR class, and all 3 bring different things to the table. Jones has the most ability and will probably go the highest in the draft, but Posey could have a huge week in Mobile and really start to raise his draft stock.

Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama - I think we all know about Courtney Upshaw. I doubt the Patriots will have a shot at him unless they trade up.

Other Players who should interest the Patriots: Brandon Boykin, OLB, Georgia- Andre Branch, DE, Clemson-Leonard Johnson, CB, Iowa State-Markelle Martin,S, Oklahoma State- Bobby Wagner, LB, Utah State- Billy Winn, DL, Boise State- Kevin Zeitler, OG, Wisconsin

We need corners and a safety first. We got poor Edelman out there last week guarding bolden and mccourty playing a safety position. Come on man.

I would love to see the Pats get Jenkins but i think he might get picked up b4 Kirkpatrick cuz of his drug use issue. Which would be awesome and almost like the Hernandez pick a year ago cuz i think Kirkpatrick is the kind of CB the pats need someone that is tall and can cover the likes of megatron or andre.

So with the first 2 picks (if BB doesnt… trade down which he prob will) would be CB, Safety. I wouldnt draft a wr until late in the draft cuz there will be plenty of them this off-season.

I think the 2nd or 3rd round is where they would take a wr if they do, with a little help from josh mcdaniels. Maybe someone like Nick Toon, Marvin McNutt, Brian Quick, or Jarius Wright.

I keep hearing that Brandon Lloyd might follow Josh to NE which I am all for. He hasn’t had a great qb throwing to him for most of his career and he is only 2 years removed from that breakout year in Denver.

I would be very pleased if we started next year with a new contract for wes, Brandon Lloyd and and young guy from the draft. That would be plenty for Tom to work with.

Ryan I would love to see the patriots take sanu but I am think more on the lines of mark barron saftey form alabama of stephan gilmore corner from south carolina

The more I see the Patriots play the more we need a WR. I think they will take a WR high in this years draft unless they go after one in the FA. Any thoughts on whether they look at Sanu from Rutgers. The way they went after Underwood makes me believe its possible. I also think they go after Chase Minnfield from UVA at CB. I think they really wanted him last year.
