Patriots Start Trimming Roster

The Patriots started the process of cutting their roster down to 53 players – a task that will ultimately relieve 27 current Patriots of their playbooks.

On the chopping block today were a bevy of young players. Darryl Richard, a long-shot for the roster, but a defensive lineman that had a good pre-season was a bit of a surprise. We figured that the Patriots could pick up a late-round pick for the young defender, although it seems a market did not develop.

Other players released today were: RB Richard Medlin, OL Mike Berry, OL Jonathan Compas, OL Corey Woods, TE Carson Butler, WR/DB Buddy Farnham, and LB Ricky Brown.

Sammy Morris and Brandon Meriweather just got cut as well. I figured Morris would be out, but I would have given Meriweather a little more time to get back into shape. This is a huge disappointment with regard to Meriweather.
