In the continuing saga of the transformation of the Patriots defensive line, former 49er and Redskin defender Andre Carter has signed with the New England Patriots.
Carter was originally drafted by the 49ers, playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 formation. He racked up 32 sacks in his six years in San Francisco.
After signing a big free-agent deal in Washington, he transitioned well to the 4-3 scheme. As a defensive end Carter tallied 34 more sacks.
Carter, now 32 years old, had a somewhat disappointing year in 2010 – his worst year as a pro. Some of that can be put on the Redskins change to the 3-4 in 2010 that Carter, like his teammate Haynesworth, didn’t agree with.
That said, with his experience, he should immediately compete with Anderson and the incumbent Patriots Eric Moore, Jermaine Cunningham, and Rob Ninkovich for playing time.
