20 for 20: 2001

20 for 20

Editor’s Note: Doug Kyed, our intrepid staff writer, will be doing some extra work for the final twenty days before the 2011 NFL Draft, taking a look at the last twenty NFL Drafts.

Today he looks at the 2001 NFL Draft Class.

Poor Cleveland. The Browns essentially didn’t make a good draft pick until 2003. The ’99, ’00 and ’01 classes were strewn with poor decisions like Tim Couch, Courtney Brown, Gerard Warren over Richard Seymour and LaDainian Tomlinson and Quincy Morgan over Chad Johnson.

My Top Ten for the 2001 NFL Draft Class:

Michael Vick: Rd. 1 Pick 1 – Atlanta Falcons
LaDainian Tomlinson: Rd. 1 Pick 5 – San Diego Chargers
Richard Seymour: Rd. 1 Pick 6 – New England Patriots
Steve Hutchinson: Rd. 1 Pick 17 – Seattle Seahawks
Casey Hampton: Rd. 1 Pick 19 – Pittsburgh Steelers
Reggie Wayne: Rd. 1 Pick 30 – Indianapolis Colts
Drew Brees: Rd. 2 Pick 32 – San Diego Chargers
Chad Johnson: Rd. 2 Pick 36 – Cincinatti Bengals
Kris Jenkins: Rd. 2 Pick 44 – Carolina Panthers
Steve Smith: Rd. 3 Pick 74 – Carolina Panthers

Other Significant Players – Leonard Davis, Justin Smith, Dan Morgan, Marcus Stroud, Santana Moss, Nate Clements, Deuce McAllister, Todd Heap, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Alge Crumpler, Kendrell Bell, Aaron Schobel, Matt Light, Shaun Rogers, Derrick Burgess, Adrian Wilson

My Top Player: Tomlinson
Consensus Top Player: Tomlinson
No Hall of Famers
Possible Future HOF: Tomlinson, Seymour, Hutchinson, Wayne, Brees
Best Value: Brees
Biggest Bust: Former Patriot David Terrell

Best Patriots Pick: The Patriots had three great pickups in this year’s class with Seymour, Light and Stephen Neal. Seymour’s the best player and Neal’s the best value. I’ll go with Seymour.

Worst Patriots Pick: Other than the above three players, this was a weak class, but since almost all of the draft’s best players went before the Patriots’ third round pick I’ll choose Owen Pochman. Seriously, what were they doing picking a kicker even in the seventh round? Sidenote, I sincerely hope at some point Hakim Akbar’s nickname was “Admiral.”

Best Team Class: It’s between the Cardinals (Davis, Vanden Bosch, Wilson, Renaldo Hill, Marcel Shipp), Bills (Clements, Schobel, Travis Henry, Jonas Jennings, Shayne Graham) and Colts(Wayne, Idrees Bashir, Ryan Diem, Rick DeMulling, Nick Harper, Dominic Rhodes). I’m picking the Colts.

Overall Grade: B-, fairly average with a few very great players.
